Vulcans blank Shippensburg in sweep

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. (April 10) – The Vulcans posted a pair of shutout victories on Saturday afternoon to extend their winning streak to 11 games, claiming 1-0 and 7-0 wins at Shippensburg in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover action.

With the victories, the California University of Pennsylvania softball team improves to 22-9 overall this season. Meanwhile, Shippensburg falls to 13-23 this year after losing four of its last five games.

Senior Lauren Shaheen (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) picked up a complete-game shutout victory in Game 1, scattering three hits and walking one in 7.0 innings. She also tied her career high with 10 strikeouts and improved to 13-3 this season. Shaheen allowed only three runners to reach scoring position and forced Shippensburg to leave four runners on base. Red Raider sophomore Chelsea Kendall (1-6) suffered the loss after allowing one run on six hits in 7.0 innings.

After four scoreless innings, the Vulcans scored the only run of the game in the fifth. Sophomore left fielder Kristen McKenzie (Senneville, Quebec/St. Thomas) started the inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt before scoring on a two-out RBI single by junior third baseman Danielle Easton (Hanover, Pa./South Western).

Easton was the only player to finish Game 1 with a multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-3.

Junior starter Maria Greco (Pickering, Ontario /Notre Dame Catholic) earned the win in the nightcap, allowing three hits in 6.1 scoreless innings with five strikeouts. Senior left-hander Sonia Petrosoniak (Mississauga, Ontario/Clarkson) worked the final 0.2 inning of the game to preserve the shutout.

Cal U took an early 1-0 lead in the first as junior second baseman Merissa Daley (Whitby, Ontario/Sinclair) opened the game with a leadoff triple before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Easton. The Vulcans added to their lead in the second when senior designated player Kayleigh Braim (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) lined a two-out RBI double.

In the fourth, senior first baseman Julia Mueller (Bairdford, Pa./Deer Lakes) collected a RBI single and Easton later added a two-run double to expand he lead to 5-0. Cal U added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh on a RBI single by sophomore catcher Alyson Johnson (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central) and Easton then scored on a wild pitch.

Junior right fielder Amanda Wallace (Oakmont, Pa./Penn Hills) finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Braim and Johnson each collected two hits. Easton totaled three RBI in the nightcap.

Cal U continues its road trip tomorrow, Sunday, April 11, when it travels to face Lake Erie for a doubleheader in Painesville, Ohio. The twinbill is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start and live stats will be available for the games by clicking here.
