KISSIMMEE, Fla. (March 7) – The No. 15 Vulcans managed a split of two games on Sunday, falling 2-1 against Truman State (Mo.) before posting a 6-2 victory over Northwood (Mich.) at the Rebel Spring Games.
With the split, the California University of Pennsylvania softball team moves to 2-2 this season.
Facing Truman State in the first game, the Vulcans took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when senior designated hitter
Julie Mackenzie (Mississauga, Ontario/Meadowvale) tripled and scored on an error. The Bulldogs then tied the game in the bottom of the second on a two-out single. The game remained tied until the bottom of the seventh when Truman State scored on a two-out error by Cal U, 2-1.
Mackenzie collected two of the four hits for Cal U and scored the team's only run.
Junior
Maria Greco (Pickering, Ontario/Notre Dame Catholic) suffered her first lost of the year after allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits in 6.2 innings. An all-region selection last year, she issued five walks while striking out nine.
In the nightcap, the Vulcans rallied from a 1-0 deficit with six runs in the bottom of the sixth. The first five batters in the sixth all reached base safely, starting with a double by junior second baseman
Merissa Daley (Whitby, Ontario/Sinclair). After a walk to Mackenzie, sophomore shortstop
Jillian Russell (London, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic), sophomore catcher
Alyson Johnson (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central) and junior third baseman
Danielle Easton (Hanover, Pa./South Western) posted back-to-to-back-to-back RBI hits. Following a sacrifice bunt, junior right fielder
Amanda Wallace (Oakmont, Pa./Penn Hills) delivered a two-run double before scoring on a double by senior first baseman
Julia Mueller (Bairdford, Pa./Deer Lakes).
Senior left-hander
Sonia Petrosoniak (Mississauga, Ontario/Clarkson) earned the victory, yielding two runs on six hits and one walk in 6.1 innings. Northwood starter Carly Gueldenzopf allowed six runs on seven hits and three walks to suffer the loss.
The Vulcans continue Spring Break play tomorrow, Monday, March 8, when they face Concordia-St. Paul (Minn.) and Stonehill (Mass.).
