Softball posts wins over D&E, West Liberty

SALEM, Va. (March 21) – In the final day of the Salem Invitational, the Vulcans posted a pair of victories on Sunday morning, winning 6-5 against Davis & Elkins and 7-0 over West Liberty.

The California University of Pennsylvania softball team finished the weekend in Virginia with a 4-1 record to improve to 7-8 overall this season. Meanwhile, D&E dropped to 9-17 and West Liberty fell to 4-15.

Against the Senators, junior Maria Greco (Pickering, Ontario/Notre Dame Catholic) picked up the victory in relief, throwing 6.1 innings, scattering two hits, and fanning nine. D&E reliever Bridget Ours was saddled with the loss after allowing one run on four hits in 1.2 innings of action.

Sophomore catcher Alyson Johnson (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central) and junior second baseman Merissa Daley (Whitby, Ontario/Sinclair) each collected two hits in the win, while junior third baseman Danielle Easton (Hanover, Pa./South Western) added two RBI.

Davis & Elkins opened the game with four runs in the bottom of the first behind a two-run single and back-to-back wild pitches. The Senators added another run in the fifth to increase their lead to 5-0.

The Vulcans then rallied to score six runs on six hits in the sixth to take their first lead of the game, 6-5. Easton delivered a two-run single before Cal U loaded the bases on a walk and single. Following a pitching change by D&E, sophomore right fielder Kristen McKenzie (Senneville, Quebec/St. Thomas), senior left fielder Kayleigh Braim (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) and freshman center fielder Jami Otter (Whitby, Ontario/Anderson C.V.I.) collected back-to-back-to-back RBI singles. McKenzie scored the eventual-game-winning run when Ours hit senior right fielder Julie Mackenzie (Mississauga, Ontario/Meadowvale) with the bases loaded.

In the nightcap, senior hurler Lauren Shaheen (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) picked up the victory after throwing 6.2 innings of scoreless relief. She scattered only three hits and registered seven strikeouts. West Liberty starter Kayla Stanley went the distance for the Hilltoppers, throwing 6.0 innings, surrendering seven runs (four earned) on 14 hits.

Johnson and Daley again posted two hits against West Liberty, as did Easton and junior first baseman Amanda Wallace (Oakmont, Pa./Penn Hills).

Cal U took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second when both runs scored on an error by the Hilltopper third baseman. The Vulcans added a run in the third on another error by West Liberty.

In the fourth, Otter started the inning with a double and later scored on a RBI single by Mackenzie. The Vulcans then sealed the victory with RBI singles by freshman Lauren Berner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley), Wallace and Daley in the sixth inning.

The Vulcans are scheduled to return to action on Wednesday, March 24, when they open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play against Edinboro at Lilly Field. The first game is scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. start.
