SALEM, Va. (March 20) – The California University of Pennsylvania softball team took a split in a pair of pitchers' duals on Saturday at the Salem Invitational, winning 1-0 against Charleston (W.Va.) before losing 2-1 to Alderson-Broaddus.

The split moves the Vulcans to 5-8 overall this season, while the Golden Eagles fall to 10-11 on the year and the Battlers improve to 3-16.

Senior Lauren Shaheen (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) threw a complete-game shutout against Charleston, scattering three hits over 7.0 innings with no walks and six strikeouts. Charleston starter Stefanie Rossman was saddled with the loss after yielding only one run and three hits in 6.0 innings of work.

With the game scoreless after four innings, the Golden Eagles looked to the first lead of the game after having runners on the corners, however, Sheen registered a strikeout to end the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, senior right fielder Julie Mackenzie (Mississauga, Ontario/Meadowvale) opened the inning for the Vulcans with a double. After Rossman retired the next two batters, junior third baseman Danielle Easton (Hanover, Pa./South Western) delivered a two-out RBI single that plate Mackenzie from second for the game's only run.

Shaheen preserved the shutout by retiring the side in order in the top of the seventh.

In Game 2, junior Maria Greco (Pickering, Ontario/Notre Dame Catholic) suffered the loss against Alderson-Broaddus, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits in a complete game, while setting a season high of 12 strikeouts. Mereaha Cooper earned the victory for A-B, allowing one run and scattering three hits over 7.0 innings.

The Battlers scored the game's first run on a sacrifice fly in the second inning before the Vulcans tied the game at 1-1 after manufacturing a run in the fifth. Senior left fielder Kayleigh Braim (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) reached base on a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt before scoring on a two-out single by Mackenzie.

A-B scored the eventual game-winning run behind two errors and a sacrifice bunt in the top of the sixth.

Cal U concludes play at the Salem Invitational tomorrow, Sunday, March 21, when it plays Davis & Elkins and West Liberty.
