Box Score vs. Ferris State (Mich.)

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (March 10) – The California University of Pennsylvania softball team suffered its fourth-straight loss on Wednesday at the Rebel Spring Games, falling 6-4 to Minnesota State Mankato and 2-1 to Ferris State (Mich.).

With the doubleheader sweep, the Vulcans drop to 3-7 this season.

Against Minnesota State, junior right fielder Amanda Wallace (Oakmont, Pa./Penn Hills) went 2-for-4 with a homer, four RBI and one run. Junior third baseman Danielle Easton (Hanover, Pa./South Western) added a double and scored two runs.

The Mavericks scored three runs in the top of the first before the Vulcans rallied to tie the game at 3-3 on a three-run homer by Wallace in the bottom of the inning. Mankato reclaimed the lead with a two-out, two-run rally in the fourth before adding an insurance run in the sixth. Cal U cut the deficit to 6-4 in the bottom of the sixth with a RBI single by Wallace that plated Easton, who reached base on a double. The Vulcans managed to move three runners into scoring position in the seventh, but were unable to plate a run.

Senior Lauren Shaheen (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) dropped to 1-3 this year after allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and three walks in 5.0 innings of relief with four strikeouts. Starter Maria Greco (Pickering, Ontario/Notre Dame Catholic) took a no-decision despite about allowing three runs in less than an inning of work.

Mankato hurler Courtney McKelvogue earned the complete-game victory, yielding four runs (one earned) on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

In the nightcap against Ferris State, Cal U lost a 2-1 pitcher's duel with the game being decided on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Bulldogs scored the first run of the game in the third inning before the Vulcans evened the score at 1-1 in the sixth on a leadoff solo homer by senior right fielder Julie Mackenzie (Mississauga, Ontario/Meadowvale). In the bottom of the seventh, Ferris State started the eventual game-winning rally with a single by right fielder Colleen Roney, who advanced to second on a wild pitch. Second baseman Amanda Herrington then reached base via a walk before both runners moved into scoring position on an illegal pitch by Shaheen with no outs. The game ended when Roney scored on a wild pitch from senior Sonia Petrosoniak (Mississauga, Ontario/Clarkson).

Both teams each managed only four hits in the game with Mackenzie collecting the only extra-base hit.

Petrosoniak dropped to 2-1 this season after allowing two runs (one earned) in 6.0 innings with three strikeouts. Bulldogs' freshman Dana Bowler earned the complete-game victory after yielding only one run on four hits with no walks and seven strikeouts in 7.0 innings.

Cal U continues play at the Rebel Spring Games tomorrow, Thursday, March 11, when it faces New York Institute and C.W. Post.
