FLORENCE, Ala. (Sept. 5) – After losing their first match of the North Alabama Classic, the Vulcans rallied to win their final three matches of the two-day weekend tournament, collecting victories over host North Alabama, Christian Brothers (Tenn.) and Northern Kentucky.
With the three wins, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team improves to 5-3 overall this season.
The Vulcans opened the UNA Classic with a 3-0 loss (25-16, 25-23, 25-23) to No. 20 Indianapolis – one of only two teams to beat Cal U last season. In the loss, senior outside hitter
Joanna Nist (Rockwood, Pa./Rockwood) led the Vulcans with 15 kills while freshman
Meghan Franz (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) and sophomore
Bridget Bielich (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) each recorded eight kills. Sophomore
Kortney Eshleman (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle) collected 35 assists and five digs, while junior
Julie Paronish (Hastings, Pa./Northern Cambria) finished with a team-high 16 digs.
Cal U then rallied to win a 3-2 match (22-25, 25-18, 25-21, 18-25, 15-11) against the host Lions on Friday night. Nist recorded a double-double with a team-high 21 kills and 15 digs, while senior middle hitter
Ludmila Amaral (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Afonso Schimidt) added 18 kills and five blocks (two solo). Eshleman, playing for injured two-time All-American
Renata da Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Ateneu), engineered the offense with 53 assists. Senior
Ashley Moore (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) led four Cal U players to post double-digit digs with 18.
On Saturday, the Vulcans opened the second day of the tournament with a 3-0 victory (25-19, 25-16, 25-12) over Christian Brothers. Nist and Bielich led the offensive attack with 13 and eight kills, respectively. Eshleman finished with 31 assists, while Paronish had 10 digs.
Cal U closed the UNA Classic with a 3-1 win (25-23, 25-20, 16-25, 25-20) against Northern Kentucky. Franz posted 13 kills on 19 attacks for an impressive .684 hitting percentage, while Nist registered a double-double with 10 kills and 15 digs. In the match, Nist reached the 1,200-career dig milestone. Moore and Paronish added 16 and 12 digs, respectively.
The Vulcans return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 9, for their home opener against Glenville State. The match at Hamer Hall is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
