CALIFORNIA (April 28) – Former California University of Pennsylvania quarterback
Kevin McCabe (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland/Virginia) signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers as an undrafted free agent on Monday. McCabe will report to the Steelers' training facility on Friday for the opening of mini-camp.
Last year, McCabe helped guide the Vulcans to a 12-2 record, a fourth-straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West title, the first PSAC Championship since 1984 and back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Division II Semifinals.
A native of Gibsonia, Pa., McCabe became the first Cal U quarterback to throw for 3,000 yards and 30 touchdowns. In addition to school records for yards and touchdowns, the 6-2, 220-pound quarterback established single-season school marks for completions (253) and total offense (3,196). He earned All-PSAC West Second Team honors and played in the Valero Cactus Bowl, an all-star game for Division II players.
McCabe is one of five quarterbacks working with the Steelers during the off-season program and will be competing for a roster spot with starter Ben Roethlisberger, Charlie Batch, Dennis Dixon and Mike Reilly, another undrafted free agent signed by Pittsburgh on Monday.
This marks the second-straight season in which a Cal U standout has signed with a NFL team as undrafted free agent, as former linebacker
Gary Butler worked out with the Philadelphia Eagles last year.
