CALIFORNIA (April 25) – In the second day of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship Tournament, the No. 24 Vulcans were eliminated from the double-elimination tournament after losing twice at Lilly Field to No. 18 Bloomsburg University, falling 3-2 and 6-0.
With the losses, the California University of Pennsylvania softball team falls to 33-8 overall. The 33 wins marks the most in a season since the 2002 campaign (34-7). Meanwhile, Bloomsburg improves to 33-8 overall and will face Kutztown University in a three-team, single-elimination PSAC Tournament next Sunday, May 3, hosted by Lock Haven University.
In Game 1, freshman catcher
Alyson Johnson (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central) tied the game with a two-run homer (13th of the season) in the top of the sixth inning. However, the Huskies scored the eventual game-winning run in the bottom of the inning during a rundown.
Bloomsburg took a 2-0 lead in the fourth when centerfielder Lori Neyhard lined a bases-loaded single. Cal U evened the contest at 2-2 with the blast from Johnson. The 13 homers by Johnson is a freshman school record and ties her with Jen Wagner (1996) for third-place overall in single-season history.
The Huskies scored the game-winning run when Nikki Shiko touched home before Neyhard was tagged out in a rundown when trying to stretch a single into a double.
Junior
Lauren Shaheen (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) suffered the loss after allowing one run in 2.1 innings of relief. Classmate
Sonia Petrosniak (Mississauga, Ontario/Clarkson) took a no-decision after yielding two runs on five hits in 3.2 innings.
Senior Tara Reed earned the victory after scattering two runs on three hits with eight strikeouts in 7.0 innings. Cal U sophomore
Maria Greco (Pickering, Ontario/Notre Dame Catholic) was saddled with the loss after allowing one run in 1.1 innings.
In the nightcap, sophomore Shavaun Fisher limited the Vulcans to only two hits, as Bloomsburg registered a 6-0 victory. The Huskies took a quick 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second before Reed posted a two-run homer in the fourth, 6-0.
Junior left fielder
Kayleigh Braim (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) collected both hits for Cal U, finishing 2-for-3.
Cal U now waits on a possible second-straight NCAA Tournament selection. The Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament is scheduled to begin Thursday, May 8, at a site to be determined.
