CALIFORNIA (April 17) – Freshman catcher
Alyson Johnson (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central) blasted two homers in Game 1 on Friday, as the No. 22 Vulcans claimed a doubleheader sweep over Gannon University at Lilly Field in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play, winning 8-5 and 4-0.
With the wins, the California University of Pennsylvania softball team improves to 29-5 overall and 10-0 in divisional action. Meanwhile, Gannon drops to 20-19 overall and 5-9 in league play.
Johnson now ranks tied for fourth with
Becky Mezyk (2004) in single-season school history with 11 homers. The single-season record of 14 homers was set by
Jen Doty in 2005.
After the Golden Knights scored in the top of the first, the Vulcans countered with two runs in the bottom of the inning on one hit, two walks, two errors and a wild pitch. Gannon evened the score in the third before Johnson belted a solo homer in the bottom of the third, 3-2.

Julie Mackenzie (Mississauga, Ontario / Meadowvale). Johnson followed with a two-run single and moved to third on a single by freshman shortstop
Jillian Russell (London, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic). Johnson eventually scored on a error while freshman
Katie Burke (Kitchener, Ontario/St. Louis) lined a pinch-hit RBI single that scored Russell.
Johnson sealed the victory with a solo longball (11th of the season) in the sixth.
Sophomore
Maria Greco (Pickering, Ontario/Notre Dame Catholic) (12-3) earned the complete-game victory after allowing a season-high five runs (three earned) on nine hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
Senior Lauren Soldner suffered the loss after being roughed up for eight runs (six earned) on nine hits in 6.0 innings.
Johnson anchored the offense in the opener, going 3-for-4 with two homers, four RBI and three runs scored. Mackenzie also posted two hits and scored two runs.
In the nightcap, Johnson started the run scoring for the Vulcans with a RBI single in the first. Cal U added to its lead in the third when Mackenzie posted a two-out, solo homer (fourth of the season).
Cal U added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth on back-to-back, two-out RBI singles by freshman designated player
Kristen McKenzie (Senneville, Quebec/St. Thomas) and Burke.
Junior
Sonia Petrosoniak (Mississauga, Ontario/Clarkson) improved to 8-0 this season after working 5.2 innings of scoreless relief. She scattered only two hits and registered seven strikeouts. Fellow junior Kelsey Brickman was saddled with the loss after allowing four runs on six hits with nine strikeouts.
McKenzie led the team with a pair of hits in Game 2, while four different players drove in one run.
The Vulcans return to action tomorrow, Saturday, April 18, with a Senior Day doubleheader against Edinboro University. First pitch at Lilly Field is scheduled for 1 p.m. The doubleheader will be available for fans across the world to watch on-line via
