Bertagnolli earns win No. 800 in sweep

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (March 3) – Head coach Rick Bertagnolli earned his 800th career collegiate victory on Wednesday after the Vulcans posted victories over Kentucky Wesleyan College and Lake Erie College at the Rebel Spring Games on Wednesday.

With the two victories, the California University of Pennsylvania softball team improves to 6-0 this season. Bertagnolli now has amassed 801 career wins through his 25 seasons as a college head coach with 538 victories at Cal U – the most of any coach in any sport in school history.

In a 10-3 victory over Kentucky Wesleyan, sophomore Maria Greco (Pickering, Ontario/Notre Dame Catholic) tossed six innings with six strikeouts to earn the victory. Junior Sonia Petrosoniak (Mississauga, Ontario/Clarkson) threw the final inning of the game.

Junior Julia Mueller (Bairdford, Pa./Deer Lakes) went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer in the victory, while freshman Alyson Johnson (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central) collected a pair of hits. Junior Julie Mackenzie (Mississauga, Ontario/Meadowvale) hit a two-run double in the second inning.

The Vulcans posted an 11-3 win over Lake Erie in the second game. Mackenzie went 3-for-3 with two doubles, while Johnson and senior Heather Bihler (Eighty Four, Pa./Trinity) each added two hits.

Freshman Jillian Russell (London, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic) belted a two-run homer in the fifth.

Junior Lauren Shaheen (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) earned the win after working the first 4.0 innings, registering four strikeouts. Classmate Allison Hasbrouck (Corry, Pa./Corry) threw for the final 3.0 innings with three strikeouts.

The Vulcans continue play at the Rebel Spring Games tomorrow, Thursday, March 5, with games against Mount Olive College (N.C.) and Georgian Court University (N.J.).
