ERIE (March 31) – The No. 15 California University of Pennsylvania softball team mounted a five-run seventh inning on Tuesday to claim a doubleheader sweep against Gannon University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action, winning 7-0 and 6-1.

With the wins, the Vulcans improve to 6-0 in league play and 24-4 overall. Meanwhile, the first-year, PSAC-member Golden Knights fall to 13-12 and 0-4 in divisional action.

Freshman Alyson Johnson (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central) and sophomore Danielle Easton (Hanover, Pa./South Western) each belted homers in the doubleheader and led the team with three RBI each.

In game one, Cal U broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the top of the fifth. After back-to-back singles to start the inning, freshman designated player Katie Burke (Kitchener, Ontario/St. Louis) lined a two-run single before scoring on error. Junior second baseman Julie Mackenzie finished off the scoring with a two-out RBI single. The Vulcans added to their lead in the sixth when Easton hammered a three-run homer (second of the season) to centerfield, 7-0.

Sophomore Maria Greco (Pickering, Ontario/Notre Dame Catholic) picked up her ninth victory of the season in the first game, throwing a two-hit, compete-game shutout. The reigning PSAC West Pitcher of the Week walked one batter and registered 11 strikeouts against the Golden Knights. She allowed only three Gannon players to reach scoring position, but none of the three advanced past second base.

Senior Lauren Soldner was saddled with the loss after tossing 7.0 innings and surrendering seven runs (five earned) on 10 hits.

Easton led the offense, going 2-for-3 with a homer, three RBI, two runs and one stolen base. Junior right fielder Amanda Wallace (Oakmont, Pa./Penn Hills), Burke and freshman center fielder Aubrey Martin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Carrick) also posted multi-hit games.

In the nightcap, junior right-hander Lauren Shaheen (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) earned the win (8-2) after tossing a two-hit complete game. She allowed only one run with no walks and two strikeouts. Junior Kelsey Brickman suffered the loss after allowing five runs on seven hits in 2.0 innings of relief.

The Golden Knights claimed an early lead in the second game when designated player senior Kara Hensley belted a two-out solo homer in the first. Cal U evened the score in the third when Johnson collected a two-out, RBI single through the middle that scored Mackenzie from second.

The Vulcans broke the 1-1 tie with a five-run outburst in the top of the seventh. Burke started the rally with a double and Martin followed with a bunt single. Junior left fielder Kayleigh Braim (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) plated Burke and Martin with a triple before scoring on a single by Mackenzie. Johnson sealed the victory with a two-run homer (eight of the season) to leftfield.

Johnson went 3-for-4 with a homer, three RBI and one run scored in the nightcap. Braim and Mackenzie each posted multi-hit games with Braim collecting a pair of RBI and Mackenzie scoring two runs.

Cal U continues PSAC West play on Friday, April 3, when it travels to face rival Edinboro University for a 2:30 pm doubleheader.
