CALIFORNIA (March 30) – In a doubleheader match-up between two Top 25 programs, the No. 15 Vulcans were swept by No. 9 Lock Haven University on Monday at Lilly Field, 1-0 and 3-0.
With the results, both the California University of Pennsylvania softball team and Lock Haven hold identical 22-4 overall records.
In Game 1, senior Kristin Erb and sophomore
Maria Greco (Pickering, Ontario/Notre Dame Catholic) battled to a 1-0 extra-inning pitchers' duel. The two pitchers combined to allow only six base hits and one walk, while registering 23 strikeouts in eight innings.
Erb earned the victory after tossing an eight-inning, complete-game shutout with no walks and 11 strikeouts. Greco (8-2) was saddled with the loss after yielding only one run on three hits and one walk. She also tied a season-high with 12 strikeouts.
The Bald Eagles collected the only extra-base hit of the game when second baseman Amanda Gutmaker doubled to lead off the eighth. She moved over to third on a sacrifice bunt before scoring on a wild pitch. Erb retired the Vulcans in order in the bottom of the inning to seal the victory.
Cal U only managed one runner in scoring position after junior second baseman
Julie Mackenzie (Mississauga, Ontario/Meadowvale) hit a one-out single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt in the first inning.

Danielle Easton (Hanover, Pa./South Western), each collected hits in Game 1.
Erb (20-3) returned to the hill in the nightcap and tossed another complete-game shutout (13th of the season). She scattered six hits in seven innings and induced 16 groundball outs after posting two strikeouts.
Junior
Lauren Shaheen (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) suffered the loss after allowing three runs (one earned) on nine hits in 5.2 innings, while recording six strikeouts.
Lock Haven jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on three hits and two errors before adding an unearned run in the fifth.
Cal U managed to have runners on both second and third in the second and third innings, but Erb was able to work out of the situations without allowing a run.
Senior third baseman
Heather Bihler (Eighty Four, Pa./Trinity) went 3-for-3 with one double in the loss.
The Vulcans begin a five-game road trip tomorrow, Tuesday, March 31, when they travel to Erie, Pa., to face Gannon University. The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West doubleheader is scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. start.
