SALEM, Va. (March 21) – The No. 6 California University of Pennsylvania softball team extended its win streak to eight games on Saturday at the Salem Tournament with victories over Ohio Valley University (W.Va.), 6-2, and Seton Hill University, 6-3.
With the victories, the Vulcans improve to 15-1 overall this season with a 6-0 mark against schools in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC).
Against Ohio Valley, junior
Sonia Petrosoniak (Mississauga, Ontario/Clarkson) tossed 6.1 innings to improve her record to 6-0 this season. Classmate
Lauren Shaheen (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) closed out the game with a pair of strikeouts in the seventh.
Freshman
Alyson Johnson (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central) belted a three-run homer (fifth of the season) in the fifth, while senior
Heather Bihler (Eighty Four, Pa./Trinity) hit a solo homer in the seventh (second of the season.
Shaheen started the nightcap, throwing 4.2 innings with four strikeouts to earn her fifth victory of the year. Petrosoniak finished the game in the circle after tossing 2.1 innings of relief with a three strikeouts.
Juniors
Kayleigh Braim (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) and
Julia Mueller (Bairdford, Pa./Deer Lakes) each led the offense in Game 2 with three hits each.
Cal U concludes play at the Salem Tournament tomorrow, Sunday, March 22, with games against the University of Charleston (W.Va.) and Shepherd University.
