KISSIMMEE, Fla. (March 2) – In their first action of the season, the Vulcans used timely hitting and solid pitching to claim a pair of wins over No. 13 Lewis University (Ill.) and the University of Mary (N.D.) in the first day of the Rebel Spring Games on Monday.
In the opener, the California University of Pennsylvania softball team claimed a 5-0 victory over the nationally-ranked Flyers (11-7). Sophomore
Maria Greco (Pickering, Ontario/Notre Dame Catholic) (1-0) tossed the complete-game shutout, registering six strikeouts with no walks in seven innings.
Freshman designated hitter
Alyson Johnson (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central) gave the Vulcans a 3-0 lead in top of the fourth with a three-run homer in her second career at-bat. Cal U added a pair of insurance in the seventh when sophomore pinch hitter
Merissa Daley (Whitby, Ontario/Sinclair) drew a bases-loaded walk and sophomore right fielder
Amanda Wallace (Oakmont, Pa./Penn Hills) scored on an error.
In the 8-5 win against Mary (4-10), junior
Sonia Petrosoniak (Mississauga, Ontario/Clarkson) earned the victory after throwing five innings of relief with three strikeouts and no walks.
Junior
Kayleigh Braim (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) collected a pair of hits and RBI in the victory, while Daley posted two hits with a RBI. Freshman
Katie Burke (Kitchener, Ontario/St. Louis) and junior
Julie Mackenzie (Mississauga, Ontario/Meadowvale) each registered a RBI in the victory.
The Vulcans (2-0) continue play in the Rebel Spring Games tomorrow, Tuesday, Feb. 3, against Holy Family University and Bellarmine University (Ky.).
