GLENVILLE, W.Va. (March 15) – The No. 8 California University of Pennsylvania softball team earned three victories at the Glenville State Tournament over West Virginia Intercollegiate Collegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) members Davis & Elkins, Salem International and Seton Hill.
With their three victories, the Vulcans improve to 12-1 overall.
In its first game of the tournament, Cal U posted an 8-1 win over D&E following an eight-run fourth inning. Freshman shortstop
Jillian Russell (London, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic) led the inning off with a triple before scoring on a homer by sophomore right fielder
Amanda Wallace (Oakmont, Pa./Penn Hills), 2-0. Later in the inning, senior second baseman
Julie Mackenzie (Mississauga, Ontario/Meadowvale) hit a two-run, two-out double and scored on a double by senior third baseman
Heather Bihler (Eighty Four, Pa./Trinity). Freshman designated hitter
Alyson Johnson (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central) then smashed her fourth longball of the season. In her second at-bat of the inning, Russell legged out another triple and scored on an error to finish off the inning and give the Vulcans a secure 8-0 lead.
After D&E scored an unearned run in the fifth, Cal U forced the eight-run rule when Wallace collected her fourth RBI on a two-out RBI single.
The combination of sophomore
Maria Greco (Pickering, Ontario/Notre Dame Catholic) and junior
Sonia Petrosoniak (Mississauga, Ontario/Clarkson) combined to allow only two hits and one walk. Greco started the game and threw three no-hit innings with five strikeouts before Petrosoniak earned the win after throwing three innings of relief, allowing one unearned run.
Against Salem International, the Vulcans posted an 8-0 win in five innings. Sophomore catcher
Danielle Easton (Hanover, Pa./South Western) led the offense, going 3-for-3 with a double, one RBI and two runs scored. Russell collected three RBI after hitting a three-run homer in the first inning.
Junior pitcher
Lauren Shaheen (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) improve to 3-0 on the season, allowing only two hits in 3.0 innings with one walk and five strikeouts. Senior
Allison Hasbrouck (Corry, Pa./Corry) completed the shutout after tossing two scoreless innings of relief allowing only two hits.
Petrosoniak earned her second win of the tournament in the 8-0 victory over Seton Hill on Saturday. The junior Canadian hurled her first complete-game shutout the season, scattering three hits over six innings with four walks and two strikeouts.
Offensively, the Vulcans scored runs in four of the six innings, including a five-run sixth. Easton hit a two-run homer to extend the lead to 5-0. Later in the inning, sophomore center fielder
Merissa Daley (Whitby, Ontario/Sinclair) added a RBI single and scored in on a two-run double by Russell.
Mackenzie paced the offence, finishing 3-for-4 with a homer and two runs score. Six different Vulcans collected a RBI in the game and six starters also scored at least one run.
Cal U was also scheduled to face the Charleston (W.Va.) and Shepherd, however, the games were cancelled.
The Vulcans return to action next weekend at the Salem Tournament, beginning Friday, March 20.
