Vulcan trio to play in Valero Cactus Bowl

KINGSVILLE, Texas (Dec. 15) – California University of Pennsylvania wide receivers Dominique Curry (Philadelphia, Pa./George Washington/Cheyney) and AJ Jackson (Lehigh Acres, Fla./Lehigh/Sequoias) and cornerback Terrence Johnson (Braddock, Pa./Woodland Hills) were recently selected to play in the 2010 Valero Cactus Bowl on Friday, Jan. 8.

The Cactus Bowl, which is a two-team all-star game featuring NCAA Division II senior football players, will be played at Javelina Stadium in Kingsville, Texas, on the campus of Texas A&M-Kingsville.

Curry played in 11 games this year after battling injuries and playing three seasons in the PSAC East at Cheyney. A former two-sport star for the Wolves, he made four catches this year and registered 13 tackles (nine solo) with two blocked kicks while starring on special teams this year. Over his four-year career between Cheyney and Cal U, Curry posted 2,266 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns on 138 receptions.

Jackson posted one of the best seasons in the country by a wide receiver in 2009. He shattered the single-season school records with 101 receptions, 1,424 receiving yards and 18 receiving touchdowns. The Florida native ranked among the top 15 in NCAA Division II in both receptions and receiving yards. In only two seasons with the program, Jackson holds the all-time record with 28 receiving touchdowns and is fourth with 2,130 receiving yards.

Johnson, a two-time Daktronics All-American, finished tied for the team lead with three interceptions (all in the post-season). He also set a career-high with 56 tackles (39 solo) and added nine pass break-ups, 4.0 tackles for loss (TFL), two forced fumbles and one blocked kick. One of the best cornerbacks in school history, Johnson finished his career with 178 tackles (133 solo), 16 interceptions and 35 pass break-ups.

This marks the fourth time in five that the Vulcans will be represented at the Cactus Bowl. Last year, quarterback Kevin McCabe and linebacker Darren Burns played in the Cactus Bowl in Texas.

There will be seven American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) All-Americans from this year and three Harlon Hill Trophy finalists playing in the Cactus Bowl. Curry, Jackson and Johnson are three of 11 senior standouts from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) participating in the all-star game.

The annual bowl game was originally known as the Snow Bowl and was played in Fargo, N.D., in 1994-2000 before being renamed the Cactus Bowl and relocated to Kingsville, Texas, in 2001. There have been over 100 players signed by NFL teams after playing in the Cactus Bowl.
