Box Score

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. (Nov. 22) – The memorable season for the No. 23 California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team ended on Sunday with a 1-0 loss to No. 2 Saint Rose (N.Y.) on the campus of Siena College in the quarterfinals of the 2009 NCAA Division II Championships.

The Vulcans finish the year with a 19-6-1 record while the Golden Knights, who are the only undefeated and untied team in the country, advance to the semifinals and will face either Grand Valley or Colorado Mines next Thursday, Dec. 3, in Tampa, Fla. Saint Rose will be making its second-straight appearance in the NCAA Semifinals.

Saint Rose was kept scoreless in the early minutes of the game after sophomore goalkeeper Paula Jackson (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's Trust) made four saves on six shots in an 11-minute span, starting at the 7:57-mark. The Golden Knights eventually netted the game-winning goal in the 38th minute when freshman forward Carly Pengelly scored her fourth goal of the year off an assist from sophomore Kimberly Morton.

The second half was a defense struggle for both teams, as they combined for only five shots in the final 45 minutes. Cal U looked to even the score in the 82nd minute before the shot attempt missed wide.

In the loss, Jackson finished with five saves on 12 shots in 90 minutes. For Saint Rose, senior goalkeeper Shannon Murphy earned her third shutout of the season.

The Golden Knights out-shot the Vulcans by a 12-2 margin and also held a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.

In its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance, Cal U posted a 3-1 record en route to earning the Atlantic Regional Championship. The Vulcans also set a school record with 19 wins this year and claimed their first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West title. Cal U is scheduled to return 10 of 11 starters next year, but will have to replace forward Amanda Heister (Palmyra, Pa./Northern Lebanon) - the program's all-time leading goal scorer.
