• 2009 NSCAA Atlantic Regional Coach of the Year
• 2009 PSAC West Coach of the Year
Al Alvine enters his fifth season as head coach at Cal U in 2011. He has built the Vulcans into one of the premier teams in not only the PSAC, but the entire country.
Last season, the Vulcans made a second-straight appearance in the Round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament and played in the program’s first PSAC Championship Game. Cal U finished the year with an 18-1-4 record and boasted the top scoring offense and defense in the PSAC. The Vulcans were ranked No. 14 in the final NSCAA Top 25 poll after being ranked as high as No. 4 during the season.
In 2009, Cal U finished with a 19-6-1 record and placed first in the PSAC West standings with a 10-3-1 divisional mark. The Vulcans then earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the quarterfinal round after allowing only two goals in four games. Following the season, Alvine was selected the PSAC West and National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Atlantic Regional Coach of the Year and Cal U was ranked No. 9 in the final NSCAA Top 25 poll.
After a tough four-win season in his first year with the Vulcans, he directed the program to an eight-win improvement in 2008. With a 12-5-3 overall record, Cal U was the most improved team in NCAA Division II that season and posted the seventh-biggest turnaround in NCAA history.
Prior to his arrival at Cal U, Alvine served as head coach for two years at Saint Anselm, a NCAA Division II program in Manchester, N.H. In each of his two seasons with the program, he led the Hawks to 10-win campaigns after the program failed to post a winning season in six years prior to his arrival. In 2005, Saint Anselm finished the season with a 10-7-3 mark and ranked among the most improved teams in the country. The Hawks' offensive attack was led by Jocelyn Savastano, who led Division II with 1.53 goals per game and 3.53 points per game. The following year, Alvine guided the Hawks to a 10-7-3 record and their first postseason win in more than a decade. The squad also posted its highest regional and national rankings in program history.
Alvine, a native of Butler, N.J., started his head coaching career at Castleton State (Vt.) in 2002. The Spartans, who had suffered nine-straight losing seasons prior to his arrival, posted a 15-5-1 mark in 2003. The following year, Alvine guided Castleton State to its best record in program history at 16-4-1 with the team ranking among the national leaders in scoring, winning percentage and fewest goals allowed.
In addition to his positions within the college ranks, he has coached numerous other teams at various levels. Alvine served as head coach of the New Hampshire Lady Phantoms of the W-League, rated as the top amateur women’s soccer league in the country and the second-ranked league in the world. At the youth level, he has served as head coach of the under-17 girls Olympic Development Program (ODP) girl’s program in Vermont and New Hampshire, Director of Coaching for the Rutland County Soccer Club in Vermont and as a staff coach for the NH Classics, a premier soccer organization in New Hampshire. In 2006, Alvine's U-16 NH Classics team captured the New Hampshire state championship.
A 1992 graduate from Robert Morris (Pa.), Alvine was a four-year starter and senior captain on the varsity men's soccer team. During his scholastic career at DePaul High School in Wayne, N.J., he was a four-year starter, three-year all-state selection and two-year captain. He was also a three-year member of the New Jersey ODP program and a player within the Sportfriends S.C. and Union Lancers youth organizations. Other playing experience includes stints with the Staten Island Vipers of the USISL and the Brooklyn Italians of the Cosmopolitan Soccer League.
Alvine holds an “A” license from the United States Soccer Federation.
