A former standout player and head coach at Steel Valley Senior High School, Kelly Sabo enters her fourth season overall on the Cal U coaching staff and the third as a volunteer assistant.

While with the Vulcans, Sabo has helped the program capture its second NCAA National Championship and post a 97-28 overall record (.776). Cal U has appeared in the NCAA Tournament in three of the last four seasons and has advanced to at least the regional final twice.

Sabo was the head coach of the Ironmen for nine years after spending two seasons as assistant coach. She guided her alma mater to multiple appearances in the state playoffs and coached numerous all-section players, including the McKeesport Daily News Player of the Year.

A graduate of Gannon, Sabo appeared in over 100 games for the Lady Knights from 1997-2001. As a junior, she helped Gannon reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time in over a decade. The following year, the Lady Knights advanced to the finals of the GLIAC Tournament for the first time in school history and also posted their first-ever win in the NCAA Tournament. Sabo finished her career among the school leaders in assists.

Sabo was a multi-sport standout athlete at Steel Valley, playing basketball, soccer and softball. She helped lead the basketball program to four appearances in the state playoffs. Sabo was named to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Fab 5 twice and played in the Roundball Classic as a senior.

Sabo earned her degree in elementary education from Gannon in 2001. She also completed her master’s degree in exercise science and health promotion with a concentration in sport psychology from Cal U in 2014.
