UPDATE (12/14): Caulfield selected PSAC Coach of the Year
UPDATE (11/12): Caulfield named Atlantic Regional Coach of the Year after Vulcans claim regional title

In 2016, Daniel Caulfield enters his third year as the head coach of the men's and women's track and field programs at Cal U and his 10th season as the head coach for cross country programs.

Since arriving at Cal U, Caulfield has coached All-Americans in the 800 meters, 1 mile, 3K, 5K, 10K, steeplechase and cross country. He has also coached multiple student-athletes at Cal U who have competed at the U.S. Olympic Trials, USATF Championships and U.S. Junior Championships. His teams are frequently awarded All-Academic Team status by the USTFCCCA, while his student-athletes have received the PSAC Champion Scholar award on four occasions.

In 2015, seven-time All-American Aaron Dinzeo became the first student-athlete in school history to be named the Capital One Academic All-American of the Year. He also received the PSAC Top 10 award for the fifth time following a runner-up performance at the NCAA Cross Country National Championships. Dinzeo, who is the all-time PSAC record holder in the 10K (28:40.88), was also the top collegiate finisher at the 2014 USATF National Championships in Sacramento, California.

Also in 2015, fellow Academic All-American Alex Zanella was awarded the PSAC Top 10 for the second time after she was voted MVP of the PSAC Outdoor Championships and the Most Outstanding Track Athlete of the indoor conference championships. In addition to her record-setting All-American performance during the indoor season, Zanella also helped the women’s program achieve its best team finish at both the indoor and outdoor PSAC Championships, while also being named the PSAC Indoor Track Athlete of the Year.

During the 2014 cross country season, both the men’s and women’s teams finished in the top five at the regional championships. In addition to Dinzeo, Abel Robinault and All-American Julie Friend also qualified for the NCAA National Championships.

Friend, the 2014 PSAC Outdoor Freshman of the Year, reached the IAAF World Junior qualifying standard when she placed third at the 2014 US Junior Championships in Eugene, Oregon. She also won the outdoor league title in the 5K in addition to an All-America finish in the steeplechase.

Summer Hill, the 2014 PSAC Outstanding Track Athlete of the Meet and PSAC Indoor Freshman of the Year, also achieved a World Junior standard in 2014 following an indoor campaign in which she won conference titles in the 1 mile and DMR.

Caulfield’s first All-American at Cal U was Christopher Clark, who holds the PSAC indoor record in the 5km indoors and previously held the 10km record. He graduated with personal records of 7:58 (3K), 13:51 (5K), and 29:03 (10K), plus five All-America awards. Clark also garnered USTFCCCA Atlantic Region and PSAC Athlete of the Year laurels.

Caulfield joined Cal U after serving as the head men’s and women’s track & field and cross country coach at fellow PSAC-member Clarion.

A native of Ireland, Caulfield started coaching at his alma mater Adams State in Alamosa, Colorado. While serving as a coach with the Grizzlies, Adams State won four NCAA women’s cross country national championships and two NCAA men’s titles.

During his collegiate career, he was a 10-time All-American and two-time NAIA National Champion. He helped lead the Grizzlies’ cross country program to National Championships in 1993 and 1994 after placing in the top five during both championship races. Caulfield also was the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) record holder in the 800 and 1500 meters. He was named to the inaugural RMAC All-Time Men’s Cross Country Team in 2009.

Caulfield earned his bachelor’s degree from ASC in exercise physiology and in late 1996 returned to Ireland to work in the exercise physiology department of the Blackrock Clinic, one of the country’s most established healthcare facilities. He returned to ASC in 1998 to complete his master’s degree and coached there until December 2004.

The Irish native held the national indoor record in the 800 meters for over a decade and was among the top 50 in the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World rankings.

Caulfield, who is a two-time European Cup champion (800 and 1500 meters), was also a two-time runner-up at the Millrose Games in Madison Square Garden and was a top-10 finisher at the 2001 World Indoor Championships in Lisbon, Portugal.
