Caulfield named Regional Coach of the Year

NEW ORLEANS (Nov. 12) – After guiding the program to its first-ever regional title, California University of Pennsylvania head cross country coach Daniel Caulfield was recently named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Atlantic Region Women's Coach of the Year.

The Vulcans earned the NCAA Atlantic Region Championship last weekend with a score of 105 points behind three top-20 finishers, including a pair in the top 10 overall. By claiming the regional title, Cal U also qualified as a team for the NCAA National Championships for the first time in program history.

Prior to last weekend, Cal U previously recorded its best-ever finish at the NCAA Regional Championships last year by finishing fourth in the team standings. The Vulcans also had never been ranked higher than third in the region dating back to the inception of the USTFCCCA regional rankings in 2009.

Caulfield has mentored four cross country NCAA All-Americans on the men's side during his time with the Vulcans. In addition, the women's program has featured an individual qualifier for the NCAA National Championships in each of the previous two years, which are the first since the program began competing at the NCAA Division II level.

During his time at Cal U, Caulfield has helped mentor a combined 15 All-PSAC performers in cross country with a pair of individual league champions. He has led the women's program to a top-10 finish in the team standings at the regional championships for three-straight years after placing either 13th or 14th each year from 2009-12.

The Vulcans will compete at the NCAA National Championships in Joplin, Missouri, on Nov. 21.
