With coaching experience at both the NAIA and NCAA Division III level, Dan Stoner enters his second season as a volunteer assistant at California (PA) in the 2022-23 campaign.
Stoner served as a student assistant for two seasons at Saint Vincent due to injury before playing his junior year for the Bearcats. He then joined former Saint Vincent head coach D.P. Harris at Saint Thomas (Fla.) for an internship in the 2020-21 campaign.
In two years as a student assistant, Saint Vincent posted a combined 38-10 overall record and captured the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) regular-season title in the 2018-19 campaign. That season, the Bearcats led the league with 22 overall victories to mark the program’s sixth 20-win season in a seven-year span. Saint Vincent featured the 2019 PAC Player of the year in Tom Kromka, who is the older brother of Pitt-Johnstown standout John Paul Kromka. While with the Bearcats, Stoner assisted in pre-season and off-season player development, practice instruction, opponent scouting and practice planning.
Stoner returned from injury to play the 2019-20 campaign at Saint Vincent, which advanced to the semifinals of the PAC Tournament after entering the post-season as the sixth seed. He also was featured on the PAC Academic Honor Roll.
The following year, Stoner reunited with Harris as a student intern at NAIA-member Saint Thomas in Miami Gardens, Florida. He aided in practice planning, recruiting, film breakdown, player development and opponent scouting. The Bobcats advanced to the 2021 Sun Conference Tournament (SCT) Championship, losing in the final seconds, to finish the year with a 14-11 overall record.
A native of North Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, Stoner has assisted with basketball camps at Stanford, Virginia and West Virginia, in addition to his alma maters Saint Vincent and Norwin High School.
Stoner earned a bachelor’s degree in business management with a minor in communication from Saint Vincent in 2021. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree from Cal in sport management with a concentration in intercollegiate athletic administration.
