A veteran coach at both the NCAA FBS and FCS levels, Bob McClain enters his first season as a volunteer assistant on the Cal U coaching staff.

McClain will serve as the offensive line coach and run-game coordinator after working as a consultant with the offensive line at Virginia State last year. In 2014, the Trojans set the school recordfor wins, captured the CIAA Championship for the first time since 1996 and qualified for the NCAA Playoffs for the first time in program history.

A native of West Virginia, McClain previously worked at Appalachian State during the 2010-11 seasons. The Mountaineers tied for first place in the Southern Conference both years and qualified for the NCAA FCS Playoffs each season, advancing to the quarterfinals in 2010. While at Appalachian State, McClain aided in the development of San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman Daniel Kilgore, who was selected in the fifth round of the 2011 NFL Draft.

McClain served as the tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator at Tulsa in 2009 under head coach Todd Graham. He previously spent the 2008 season working with the special teams and offensive quality control at Michigan under head coach Rich Rodriguez.

Prior to his time at Michigan, McClain served as the offensive coordinator at Glenville State in both 2006 and 2007, while also working with the offensive line, tight ends and running backs.

McClain started his coaching career under Rodriguez at West Virginia and spent six years with the Mountaineers from 2000-05. He was an offensive video graduate assistant for two seasons before working the offensive line and tight ends as an offensive graduate assistant coach from 2003-05.

McClain earned his bachelor’s degree in business from Waynesburg in 1996 before completing three master’s degrees from WVU.
