A former pitcher in the Frontier League and former manager in the Prospect League, Anthony Rebyanski enters his second season as an assistant coach with the Vulcans.
Last spring, Rebyanski worked with a pair of All-PSAC West pitchers in Jack Dennis and Justin Taylor. Dennis led the team in victories and innings pitched, while Taylor paced the Vulcans in strikeouts. Taylor finished his career ranked among the top 10 in school history in wins, innings pitched and strikeouts. Dennis later was one of four Cal U pitchers who spent time in the Prospect League during the 2015 summer.
Rebyanski finished his fourth season as manager of the Butler BlueSox in 2014 when Butler made its first-ever post-season appearance. That summer, the BlueSox also set the team record and tied the league record with 40 victories. Rebyanski was tabbed the Prospect League Manager of the Year in 2014 after serving as a manager for the league’s All-Star Game in both 2012 and 2013. While in Butler, he mentored Baseball America’s Top Prospect of the Prospect League in outfielder Elliot Caldwell, who played at South Carolina.
Following his collegiate career at IUP, Rebyanski pitched four seasons as a relief pitcher in the Frontier League. He started his professional career with the Gateway Grizzlies before being traded to the Windy City Thunderbolts in 2007. While with the Thunderbolts, Rebyanski was named a Frontier League North All-Star and helped Windy City win back-to-back league championships. He made 99 pitching appearances as a professional, tossing a combined 80-plus innings with the Thunderbolts.
Rebyanski spent seven years as an assistant coach at IUP from 2007-2013. He helped lead the Crimson Hawks to three-straight, 30-win seasons and the program’s first appearance in the PSAC Championship since 1990. Rebyanski also helped develop three-time All-PSAC West First-Team pitcher Stephen Cooke, who ranks as the program’s all-time leader in wins while ranking second in both innings pitched and strikeouts.
In addition to coaching duties, Rebyanski served as the program’s academic support liaison. He helped the program boast over 70 PSAC Scholar-Athletes, including Ryan Mostyn, who was a two-time selection to the PSAC Spring Top 10. Mostyn and Jake Rougeaux also were named the IUP Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2009 and 2010, respectively. In addition, Robbie Zinsmeister also became the program’s first Academic All-America in over a decade while also being an All-PSAC West First-Team selection at both second base and shortstop.
As a player for IUP, Rebyanski was selected the PSAC West Rookie of the Year in 2002. He finished his career ranked among the top 10 in school history in strikeouts, innings pitched, complete games, starts and appearances. As a senior with the Crimson Hawks, Rebyanski served as a two-way player and finished the season with a .339 batting average, four home runs and 15 RBI. He currently sits fifth in IUP history with 163 career strikeouts.
Rebyanski started his coaching career at his scholastic alma mater, Indiana High School, in 2005, before joining the IUP coaching staff the following spring. In 2010, he spent the summer as an assistant coach in the Coastal Plain League with the Thomasville HiToms. Rebyanski worked with a pair of pitchers (Ben Grisz/Duke, Jordan Jankowsi/Catawba) that were named to Coastal Plain All-Stars and later played professional baseball.
Following a summer in the Coastal Plain League, Rebyanski was hired as the manager of the Butler Blue Sox in the fall of 2010. While with the Blue Sox, Rebyanski worked with several former Cal U standouts including Kyle Petty, who was the 2013 PSAC West Athlete of the Year and was selected in the MLB Draft by the Seattle Mariners.
Rebyanski earned his bachelor’s degree in communications media from IUP in 2006. He was honored as the inaugural IUP Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2005.
Rebyanski and his wife Amy reside in Indiana, Pennsylvania, with their daughters Ava and Aliana.
