FINDLAY, Ohio (Aug. 28) – The Vulcans were swept in a pair of matches by host Findlay (Ohio) and Ashland – both Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) members – while opening their season on Friday at the Findlay Classic.
NOTES
• California was playing at the Findlay Classic for the first time since the 2012 campaign.
• Sophomore
Olivia Weiseman led the team with a combined 24 kills, while junior
Lindsey Scammell and freshman
Madelyn Salisbury both collected double-digit kills.

Gracen Hartman and
Molly Smiddy guided the offense with nearly 60 combined assists.

Tori Newton paced the defense with a combined 26 digs and four additional players posted at least 10 digs on Friday.
vs FINDLAY
• The Vulcans suffered a 3-0 loss (25-20, 26-24, 25-19) to the host Oilers, who were receiving votes in the preseason American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25 poll.
• Weiseman totaled a team-high nine kills on 41 attempts and Salisbury finished with seven kills and a .300 attack percentage in her college debut.
• Hartman and Smiddy collected 13 and 12 assists, respectively.
• Weiseman also led the team with nine digs and Newton finished with eight digs.
• Scammell recorded 7.5 points behind five kills and four blocks, while sophomore
Riley Evans added five blocks.
vs ASHLAND
• Cal and Ashland played to extra points in the final two sets with the Eagles securing a 3-0 victory (25-19, 29-27, 27-25).
• Weiseman finished with 15 kills and a .325 attack percentage, while Scammell posted nine kills on a .389 clip and two blocks.
• Hartman and Smiddy both tallied 17 assists with Hartman adding a pair of service aces.
• Newton registered a team-high 18 digs and senior
Bailey Maxin added 14 digs in the match.

• The Vulcans close play at the Findlay Classic tomorrow, Saturday, Aug. 29, when they face Davenport (MI) of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) at 10 a.m.
