ERIE, Pa. (March 7) – Led by five players scoring in double-figures, the California (PA) men's basketball team earned a 77-63 win over Seton Hill in the semifinals of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament at the Highmark Events Center on Saturday night.
With the victory, the Vulcans improve to 21-8 this season and advance to face host Gannon in the championship of the PSAC Tournament tomorrow, Sunday, March 8, in Erie, Pennsylvania. Cal will be playing in the PSAC Championship for the second time in three years and the 16th time in program history. Meanwhile, the Griffins finish the season at 18-13 overall after advancing to the semifinals of the PSAC Tournament for the first time in program history.
Redshirt junior
Bryson Lucas posted his 12th double-double of the year, as he led the team with 20 points and 11 rebounds on Saturday. He also collected four assists, one block and four steals while playing 38 minutes. Lucas has recorded a double-double in both games of the PSAC Tournament this week.
Senior
Brayden Reynolds finished with 13 points, three rebounds and eight assists, while redshirt sophomore
Antoine Arnett totaled 14 points and six rebounds. Junior
Dalman Alexander added 10 points and eight rebounds, while sophomore
Keondre DeShields registered 11 points, four rebounds and two assists off the bench.
Cal scored 15-unanswered points during a four-minute span early in the first half to build a 17-4 lead at the 13:59-mark. The Griffins later countered with a 14-0 run over three-plus minutes to cut the deficit to a 27-26 margin with 4:47 left in the first half. Cal held a 34-31 lead with 1:40 remaining behind a pair of three-pointers by Arnett before the teams entered the break with the score tied, 34-34. Cal held the lead for nearly 17 minutes prior to halftime after converting five three-pointers.
The Vulcans posted a 13-4 run over a five-minute span in the opening minutes of the second half to build a 49-42 lead with 12:38 left to play. Following a layup by Seton Hill, Cal registered a 14-2 rally behind a combined 12 points from Lucas and DeShields to extend the lead to 63-46 at the 9:09-mark. The Griffins countered with a 9-2 run to trim the deficit to 68-57 with 5:02 remaining before the teams traded three-pointers. Cal managed to maintain a double-digit lead for the rest of the game.
Cal finished the game shooting 50.0 percent (27-of-54) from the floor, including 9-of-18 (50.0 percent) from beyond the arc. The Griffins posted a .373 field-goal percentage (25-of-67) and made 7-of-28 attempts (25.0 percent) from long range. Cal finished with a 41-29 rebounding advantage, while Seton Hill forced 20 turnovers in the contest.
The Vulcans will face the Golden Knights in the PSAC Championship tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. Cal and Gannon split the regular-season series with the home team winning each time. The Golden Knights advanced to the PSAC Championship for a third-consecutive year following a 99-85 victory over IUP on Saturday.
