D2CCA All-Region Teams
PITTSBURGH (March 12) – Following a standout all-around season, California (PA) redshirt junior
Bryson Lucas was announced as Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) first-team all-region selection on Thursday morning.
With the honor, Lucas is now eligible for D2CCA All-American consideration. The Vulcans have had four different players named first-team all-region over the last five years, the most in the Atlantic Region.
Lucas was voted the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Defensive Athlete of the Year for the second time in his career last week while also being tabbed to the All-PSAC West First-Team for the first time. Over the weekend, Lucas was named the PSAC Tournament MVP after helping the Vulcans capture their first PSAC Championship since 2008 with a win at then-No. 5 Gannon, which had lost only twice in the regular season.
A native of West Virginia, Lucas is the lone player in the region to average at least 15.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.0 blocks per game. He is tied for third in the Atlantic Region with 13 double-doubles while averaging 16.9 points and 9.7 rebounds per game. Lucas is shooting 48.9 percent (194-of-397) from the floor, including 32.2 percent 46-of-143) from beyond the arc, and 71.7 percent (71-of-99) from the free-throw line after playing just three games last season due to injury.
Lucas eclipsed the 500-point milestone this year in the PSAC Championship and now ranks No. 26 all-time in school history with 1,142 points. Additionally, he is the only player in school history with over 1,000 points, 150 steals and 100 blocks in a career. Lucas has helped the Vulcans reach the NCAA Tournament for the third time in his career after the program had not appeared in the post-season for nearly 15 years.
Cal begins play in the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, March 14, when it faces Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Champion and fifth-seeded Fayetteville State at 7:30 p.m. The Atlantic Regional Tournament is being hosted by Gannon at the Highmark Events Center in Erie, Pennsylvania.
