DAVENPORT, Fla. (March 13) – Led by a combined 5.0 shutout innings of relief from freshmen
Tanner Phillips and
Evan Stranko, the Vulcans earned a 6-5 win over Northern State (SD) in Florida on Thursday afternoon.
NOTES
• California (9-4) has posted a 5-1 mark during its trip to The Sunshine State with its only loss to a nationally-ranked team.
• Phillips (1-0) earned his first career win after scattering two hits over 3.0 scoreless innings (31 pitches).
• Stranko registered his first save after allowing just two hits in 2.0 scoreless innings (34 pitches).
• Northern State scored in the first inning after starting the game on a triple before senior right fielder Conner Evans tied the score in the bottom of the first with an RBI double, 1-1.
• The Wolves responded with a two-run double with two outs in the second to take a 3-1 lead.
• Northern State stretched the lead to 5-2 in the fifth after opening the inning with a single and a triple.
• In the sixth, the Vulcans scored four runs on three hits to take their first lead of the game, 6-5.
• Sophomore catcher
Corey Kuszaj collected an RBI single before Cal loaded the bases with two outs.
• Sophomore second baseman Payton Ford then delivered a two-run double and a third run scored on the play due to an error.
• In the top of the ninth, the Wolves had runners on second and third with one out before Stranko retired the next two batters in order.
• Evans finished the game with two hits, one RBI and one run scored, while senior first baseman
Colin Patterson added a pair of hits.
