California splits games vs NSIC opponents

Vulcans fall to defending-NSIC Champion; Three players collect three hits in win over UMD

DAVENPORT, Fla. (March 10) – The Vulcans split a pair of run-rule games against Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) opponents on Tuesday in Florida, suffering a 10-0 loss against No. 23 Minnesota State before posting a 15-2 win over Minnesota Duluth.

VS MINNESOTA STATE
• The Mavericks (12-6) won the NSIC Championship for the third time in five years in 2025.
• MSU raced out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first behind a two-run triple and added a tow-run homer in the fifth by right fielder Cole Yearsley.
• The Vulcans reached base for the first time in sixth inning on a one-out single.
• MSU secured the run-rule victory by scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh.
• Junior Josh Bryson (0-2) was saddled with the loss after surrendering six runs (five earned) on seven hits and two walks in 5.0 innings.

VS MINNESOTA DULUTH
• The Bulldogs (3-11) and Vulcans last met in Florida during the 2023 season.
• Cal tied its season high with 15 runs scored and three players collected three hits in the victory.
• Redshirt freshman designated hitter Chad Helwich posted three hits, five RBI and one run scored from the leadoff spot, while senior right fielder Connor Evans tallied three hits, one RBI and three runs scored.
• Freshman center fielder Charlie Nigut finished with three hits, two RBI, one run scored and one walk, while sophomore shortstop Brandon McClain-Banks registered two hits, three RBI and two runs scored.
• The Vulcans jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the first inning after sending 12 batters to the plate.
• Evans collected a bases-loaded RBI single and McClain-Banks later added a two-run single.
• Nigut delivered a two-out RBI triple and Helwich followed with a two-run single.
• Cal added three runs in the second and four runs in the third to extend the lead to a 14-1 margin.
• Nigut and Helwich added back-to-back RBI hits in the third inning.
• UMD scored once in the fifth before Cal posted the final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth.
• Senior Nathan Holmes (2-0) was credited with the victory after allowing two runs (both earned) on five hits in 4.2 innings pitched (72 pitches).
• He totaled five strikeouts while making his first start of the season.
• Sophomore Tyler Zallenick worked 2.1 innings of scoreless, no-hit relief against the Bulldogs.

• Cal returns to action tomorrow, Wednesday, March 11, when it faces Minnesota Duluth again in Winter Haven, Florida, at 2 p.m.
