California among teams under consideration

INDIANAPOLIS (Feb. 18) – The California (PA) men's basketball program was listed among the top 10 teams from the Atlantic Region under consideration for the NCAA Tournament on Wednesday evening.

The NCAA regional rankings determine the participants for the NCAA Tournament. The Atlantic Region consists of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), Mountain East Conference (MEC) and the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). All three conference tournament champions receive an automatic bid with the top-five remaining teams in the final regional rankings earning at-large bids.

The NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Committee will slot the teams in numerical order for the first time with the second set of regional rankings, which will be announced next week.

The PSAC features half of the teams in the initial rankings, while the MEC placed three teams and the CIAA boasted two programs this week.

The Vulcans boast the third-best strength of schedule in the region, which is comprised of 40 teams, and holds a region RPI among the top five overall in the region. Cal has already played six games this season (plus another one next week) against the teams featured in the first set of regional rankings.

Joining Cal in the initial listing from the PSAC were East Stroudsburg, Gannon, IUP and West Chester. The trio of Charleston (WV), Fairmont State and West Liberty represent the MEC in the rankings, while CIAA-members Fayetteville State and Virginia Union were among the teams under consideration.

The regional rankings will be released the next two weeks before the final rankings and NCAA Tournament selections are announced on March 8.

Note, rankings and records are reflective thru games as of Sunday, Feb. 15.
