California remains at No. 8 in latest poll

WACO, Texas (Sept. 22) – After cruising to a lopsided home win, the California (PA) football team remained No. 8 in the latest American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Top 25 poll on Monday afternoon.

The Vulcans scored a touchdown on five-consecutive drives in a 42-6 victory against Lock Haven on Saturday to close their three-game homestand to open the season. Cal has been featured in the top 10 of the national poll for three-consecutive weeks after being slotted No. 15 in the preseason rankings on Aug. 11.

Cal remains one of three teams in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) featured in the national rankings – all in the top 10. Slippery Rock (3-0) remained at No. 4 following a decisive 42-0 win over Shippensburg in Week 3, while Kutztown (3-0) stayed at No. 5 after rolling to a 46-7 victory against Gannon on Saturday afternoon.

Additionally, the remainder of Super Region One now only features a single program in the top 25 this week with Virginia Union (2-1) of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) moving up one position to No. 21. The Panthers (2-1) earned a 28-10 win last week over then-No. 21 Johnson C. Smith, which fell out of the rankings.

The Vulcans open PSAC West play on Saturday, Sept. 27, when they travel to face Slippery Rock in the lone meeting of top-25 teams in NCAA Division II this week. This marks the fourth-straight year in which Cal will face a top-10 program, including last fall when the Vulcans posted a 28-7 victory over then-No. 6 Slippery Rock during the regular season.
