Vulcans sweep IUP on Senior Day

California recognize group of five seniors; Softball clinches berth in PSAC Tournament

CALIFORNIA (April 26) – Senior second baseman Kaitlyn Achtermeier tallied seven hits and nine RBI on Saturday afternoon, as the California (PA) softball team earned a doubleheader sweep against IUP at Lilley Field on Senior Day in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action with an 11-7 win in Game 1 and a 15-14 walk-off victory in Game 2.

NOTES
• The Vulcans (17-29, 14-12) have now secured a berth to next week's league tournament in Quakertown, Pennsylvania.
• Cal posted a 9-3 mark in PSAC West play at Lilley Field this spring, including four walk-off victories.
• Achtermeier collected six extra-base hits (five doubles, homer) and scored twice in the doubleheader.
• Freshmen Makayla Jerin and Amarah McCutcheon both finished with four hits and four runs scored against the Crimson Hawks.

GAME 1
• IUP held a 7-4 lead before Cal scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
• Achtermeier totaled four hits (three doubles) and four RBI, while Jerin posted two hits, three RBI, three runs scored and one walk.
• McCutcheon recorded two hits, including a solo homer, and three runs scored.
• The Vulcans took a 2-0 lead in the first on back-to-back RBI hits by Jerin and Achtermeier with two outs.
• IUP countered with five runs (all unearned) in the second and later scored twice in the top of the fourth.
• The Vulcans seized control of the game with six runs on three hits and three walks in the bottom of the inning.
• Senior left fielder Carlena Fiorilli and Achtermeier both posted RBI doubles in the fourth.
• McCutcheon added to the lead in the sixth with her 12th homer of the season.
• Junior Cheyenne Beayon (5-10) earned the victory after allowing two runs (both earned) in 2.2 innings of relief.
• Senior Taylor Babcock, who started the game, was credited with the save after reentering the game in the sixth.

GAME 2
• Cal held a 10-2 lead after four innings before surrendering 12-unanswered runs.
• The Vulcans then scored five runs on seven hits in the bottom of the seventh.
• Achtermeier finished with three hits, five RBI and two runs scored, while junior right fielder Mikayla Linkous totaled three hits, three RBI, two runs scored and one walk.
• Senior center fielder Brianna Sersevic posted two hits, three RBI and two runs scored and Fiorilli collected two hits, one RBI, two runs scored and one walk.
• Cal scored eight runs in the bottom of the fourth, highlighted by a two-run single by Sersevic and a grand slam by Achtermeier – her fifth homer of the season.
• The Crimson Hawks scored five runs in the sixth inning to cut the deficit to a 10-9 margin.
• IUP capitalized on a fielding error in the seventh to again score five runs, highlighted by a grand slam from catcher Reagan Rand.
• Cal started the comeback with three-straight RBI singles by Linkous, Fiorilli and Sersevic in the bottom of the inning.
• Jerin later delivered the game-tying RBI single with two outs before Achtermier recorded the game-winning RBI double.
• Junior Megan Nidoh (3-6) was credited with the win after retiring just one batter in relief.
• Freshman starting pitcher Makenna Curran took a no-decision after allowing five runs (all earned) in 5.0-plus innings.

NEXT
• The Vulcans close out the regular season tomorrow, Sunday, April 27, when they travel to play a doubleheader at Slippery Rock, starting at 1 p.m.
• The Rock has already secured the top seed in the division, while the Vulcans will either be the fourth or fifth seed in the PSAC Tournament.
