CALIFORNIA (April 1) – The California (PA) softball team scored over a combined 25 runs in a doubleheader sweep against Clarion in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action at Lilley Field on Tuesday evening, winning 7-2 in Game 1 before claiming a 19-11 run-rule victory in Game 2.
NOTES
• The Vulcans (7-23, 4-6) earned their first sweep of a twinbill this spring.
• The 19 runs scored in Game 2 were the most in a game by Cal since a 20-4 victory over Edinboro on April 5, 2013 – also at Lilley Field.
• Junior first baseman
Makaylia Schlosser and senior second baseman
Kaitlyn Achtermeier both finished with a combined five hits and three runs scored versus the Golden Eagles.
• Freshman
Amarah McCutcheon scored five runs, while both freshman third baseman
Makayla Jerin and senior left fielder
Carlena Fiorilli posted four runs scored.
GAME 1
• Clarion scored a pair of runs with two outs in the first before Cal scored on a two-out RBI single by Jerin in the bottom of the inning.
• The Vulcans claimed a 4-2 lead in the second on back-to-back RBI singles by senior center fielder
Brianna Sersevic and McCutcheon with two outs.
• Cal added to the lead in fourth inning with a RBI double by Sersevic and a two-out RBI single by Schlosser.
• The Vulcans added an insurance run in the sixth on another RBI single by Schlosser.
• Sersevic tallied two hits, three RBI and two runs scored, while Schlosser posted two hits and two RBI.
• Fiorilli reached base three times (two walks, single) from the leadoff spot and scored two runs.
• Junior
Cheyenne Beayon (3-8) earned the complete-game victory after allowing two runs (both earned) on four hits and four walks in 7.0 innings (91 pitches).
GAME 2
• The Vulcans earned their first run-rule victory of the season after scoring multiple runs in five of six innings.
• Six players registered multi-hit games, as Cal totaled 21 hits and five walks in the win.
• Freshman designated player
Kirra Davis posted three hits, six RBI and one run scored, while Achtermeier recorded five hits, two RBI and three runs scored.
• Schlosser collected three hits, four RBI and three runs scored and Jerin and McCutcheon both tallied three hits, two RBI and four runs scored.
• Clarion raced out to five runs in the top of the first and held a 6-1 lead in the middle of the third.
• The Vulcans scored six runs in the bottom of the inning to claim an 8-6 advantage.
• McCutcheon started the inning with a solo homer, her fifth of the year, and Davis later added a two-run double before Clarion made a pitching change.
• The Golden Eagles tied the score in the fourth before the Vulcans answered with a go-ahead, two-run homer by Schlosser – her second of the season – in the bottom half.
• Cal batted around for the second time in the game in the fifth inning and scored five runs on six hits to extend the lead to a 15-7 margin.
• Clarion scored three runs in the sixth before the Vulcans forced the run-rule victory with four runs in the bottom half.
• Schlosser posted a two-run single before Davis closed the game with a two-run double.
• Senior
Taylor Babcock (2-6) earned the win after yielding five runs (all earned) on five hits and five walks in 5.0 innings of relief (92 pitches).

• Cal is slated to host Slippery Rock for a doubleheader at Lilley Field on Friday, April 4, starting at 2:30 p.m.
