Vulcans upset PSAC West-leading Gannon

Weiseman registers triple-double in second-straight match; Cal commits zero attack errors in third set

CALIFORNIA (Nov. 8) – The California (PA) volleyball team snapped a 15-match losing streak in the series with Gannon on Saturday afternoon with a 3-1 win (13-25, 25-20, 25-16, 25-17) in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play at the Convocation Center.

NOTES
• The Vulcans (19-9, 6-6) earned their first victory over the Golden Knights since the 2016 campaign.
• Gannon entered the match undefeated in divisional action and had already clinched the top seed from the PSAC West in the upcoming league tournament.
• Freshman Olivia Weiseman registered a triple-double for the second time in as many days.
• She led the team with 18 kills on a .280 hitting percentage while setting season highs of 19 assists and five blocks, plus added 11 digs.
• Sophomore Kasie Meek totaled nine kills, 10 digs, three blocks and two service aces in the victory.
• Senior Elisa Rugiero finished with seven kills, while sophomore Lindsey Scammell and junior Sarah Stephenson both collected six kills.
• Senior Adrianna Favata recorded an assist/dig double-double with 17 assist and 13 digs, while classmate Caroline Mercer added a double-double of 22 digs and 10 assists.
• Scammell also tallied a team-high eight blocks in the win.
• Gannon controlled the opening set with a 14-4 run to record a 25-20 victory, as California committed nine attacking errors.
• The Golden Knights opened the second set with five-straight points before the Vulcans rallied with eight-unanswered points late to take the 25-20 win.
• Cal posted an staggering .545 hitting percentage in the third set – recording zero attacks on 33 attempts – in a 25-16 victory.
• The Vulcans built a seven-point lead in the fourth set before the Golden Knights trimmed the deficit to a single point before Cal closed the match by winning eight of the final nine points for a 25-17 win.

NEXT
• Cal closes out its seven-match homestand on Friday, Nov. 14, when it faces IUP for Senior Day at 6 p.m.
• The Crimson Hawks sit in second place in the PSAC West standings, one match ahead of the Vulcans and three other teams tied for third place.
• The top-four teams from the division qualify for the PSAC Tournament.
