NOTES
• California hosts Frostburg State in the second round of the NCAA Playoffs on Saturday afternoon at Adamson Stadium. The Vulcans and Bobcats, which previously met in Week 9, both earned road victories over seeded CIAA teams last weekend.

• The Vulcans scored two touchdowns off turnovers early in the first quarter while claiming a 27-24 victory at third-seeded Virginia Union in the first round of the NCAA Playoffs. Junior Khalil Taylor led the team with eight tackles and added 1.5 TFL and one pass break-up. Fellow junior Keith Charney and sophomore Malachi Thomas each added six stops. Junior Kendrick Agenor finished with 122 rushing yards and one touchdown, while quarterback Roman Purcell rushed for two scores.

• The Vulcans and Bobcats are meeting for the second time in four weeks. Cal posted a victory at Adamson Stadium in Week 9 of the regular season this year in the first meeting between the programs since 1983.

• A former coordinator at the NAIA level, Eric Wagoner holds a 31-14 record in four years as head coach with the Bobcats. He was voted the MEC Coach of the Year after leading Frostburg State to double-digit wins for the first time since becoming members of the MEC. Wagoner guided the Bobcats to eight wins in their first year in full NCAA Division II membership in 2022.

• Frostburg State earned an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Playoffs after finishing tied for first place in the MEC standings. The Bobcats featured 14 players selected to the All-MEC Teams this year, including eight first-team honorees. Frostburg State boasts one of the top defenses in Super Region One, leading the region in passing yards allowed per game. The Bobcats also pace the MEC in total defense, scoring defense sacks and turnovers forced. Defensive lineman Rainer Halveland and linebacker Kurt Thomas are tied for the team with 57 tackles, while linebacker Jaylen Boyd ranks second with 56 stops. Defensive lineman Christian Taylor leads the MEC with 10.0 sacks and is second in the league with 12.5 TFL. The Bobcats have registered 15 interceptions this year with four players tallying multiple interceptions. Offensively, Frostburg State features a prolific running back tandem in Owen Doyle and KJ Smothers. The duo has combined to rush for over 1,800 yards and 21 touchdowns this year. The Bobcats have started three different quarterbacks this year with Jordan Brooks leading the team with over 1,900 passing yards and 15 touchdowns. Frostburg State features four players tallying at least 25 catches, as wide receiver Jevonn Gilyard leads the team with 615 receiving yards and 31 catches. The Bobcats boast a MEC-best 13.48 yards per punt return and rank second in the league with 23.00 yards per kick return. Junior Austin Paul-Umstead leads the team with 438 combined return yards.

• The Vulcans are facing a team for the second time in the same year in back-to-back seasons, as they hosted Slippery Rock twice last fall. Cal has played an opponent twice in the same season five times since the reinstatement of the PSAC Championship in 2008. Prior to that, the Vulcans hadn't faced a team twice in the same year since 1984.

• While splitting time across multiple NCAA divisions, Frostburg State holds an 82-22 record (.788) over the last decade. The Bobcats joined the MEC in 2019 following three-straight, double-digit win seasons in NCAA Division III. Frostburg State made its initial appearance in the NCAA Playoffs in 1993, losing in the quarterfinals to Washington & Jefferson, which was led by Cal Hall of Fame inductee John Luckhardt.

• The Vulcans will be playing at Adamson Stadium for the first time in four weeks. Cal holds a 9-5 home record in the NCAA Playoffs and boasts a 5-1 mark in the second round. The Vulcans have faced a MEC member only once in the NCAA Playoffs, losing to Shepherd in the 2016 Super Region One Championship, as the league was established prior to the 2013 campaign.

• Super Region One is the only region in NCAA Division II to feature three unseeded teams advancing to the second round of the playoffs. The other three regions combined for four unseeded teams advancing last week with Super Region Four also featuring a meeting of unseeded teams in the second round this weekend.

• While averaging over 30 points per game, the Vulcans have scored eight non-offensive touchdowns this season. Cal has posted four touchdowns on special teams, including three scores by sophomore Deontae Williams. The Vulcans have also scored four touchdowns on defense with three interception returns for touchdowns.

• Sophomore Kendrick Agenor rushed for 122 yards and one touchdown on a career-high 26 attempts last week at Virginia Union. He has posted a combined 453 rushing yards and eight touchdowns over four games in the month of November Agenor, a native of Florida, ranks sixth in the league this year with 854 rushing yards despite not starting until Week 5 yet was still an All-PSAC West Second-Team selection.

• Last week, Cal earned its fourth win this season over a nationally-ranked opponent. The Vulcans also faced four top-25 teams last year while reaching the Super Region One Championship. Frostburg State entered the NCAA Playoffs nationally-ranked, marking Cal's fifth top-25 opponent this year. The Vulcans have previously played at least five nationally-ranked opponents in a season four times (2007-09, 2016).

• Frostburg State running backs Owen Doyle and KJ Smothers combined for over 200 rushing yards on 35 carries in last week's win at Johnson C. Smith. Smothers scored three touchdowns while finishing with 115 rushing yards on 16 attempts. He has rushed for over 800 yards and nine scores this year while totaling at least 15 carries six times. Doyle enters the week with nearly 1,000 yards this season and 12 touchdowns.

• Sophomore linebackers Malachi Thomas and Sedrick Vessah have combined for 13.0 sacks and 22.5 TFL while in their first year as starters. Vessah leads the team with 7.5 sacks and 11.5 TFL, while Thomas ranks second with 5.5 sacks and 11.0 TFL and scored on an interception return against Frostburg State in Week 9 The tandem has also totaled over 100 tackles with Thomas ranking third on the team with 56 stops.

• Last week, the Vulcans faced the most prolific running back in NCAA Division II, senior Curtis Allen of Virginia Union. He entered the weekend leading the country with 2,258 rushing yards, 29 touchdowns and 276 attempts. Cal held Allen to his second-lowest total of the season and just one score. Holding a three-point lead at halftime, the Vulcans limited Allen to just 10 yards on eight carries in the second half.

• Junior defensive back Amory Thompson recorded two interceptions at Virginia Union last weekend. His made his first interception on the initial offensive play of the game for the Panthers and later halted VUU at the Cal 3-yard line. He is the first player with multiple interceptions in the NCAA Playoffs since Tommie Campbell in 2010.

• Cal debuted a new starting offensive line last week with junior Solomon Ortiz shifting from right tackle to left tackle, classmate Nasim Gray moving from right guard to right tackle and freshman Jackson Bojanic Hubbell making his second career start, and first at right guard.
