California earns berth to NCAA Playoffs

Vulcans to face third-seeded Virginia Union of the CIAA in first round on Nov. 22 in Richmond, Virginia

INDIANAPOLIS (Nov. 16) – The California (PA) football team earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Playoffs and will face third-seeded Virginia Union in the first round, as announced during the NCAA Selection Show on Sunday evening.

The Vulcans (8-3) will be making a second-straight appearance in the NCAA Playoffs and the ninth overall in program history, all since 2007. Cal returns to the post-season after facing seven teams with winning records this fall, highlighted by three victories over nationally-ranked opponents. The Vulcans will be playing on the road in the NCAA Playoffs for the first time since 2017.

Cal will face Virginia Union of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) for the first time in program history.  The Panthers (9-2) are returning to the NCAA Playoffs for the 13th time and the fourth-consecutive year after advancing to the Super Region Two Championship last season. VUU mounted an eight-game winning streak this fall before suffering a 45-21 loss to Johnson C. Smith in the CIAA Championship yesterday.

Kutztown captured the top seed after winning a third-straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship yesterday and will face Northeast 10 (NE-10) Champion Bentley. Johnson C. Smith received the second seed and will host Mountain East Conference (MEC) Champion Frostburg State, while IUP earned the fourth seed and will face Assumption.

Cal will travel to face Virginia Union at Hovey Field in Richmond, Virginia, on Saturday, Nov. 22. The Vulcans hold a 2-1 mark against CIAA members in the NCAA Playoffs and last faced a current CIAA member during the 2015 campaign.
