INDIANAPOLIS (Nov. 12) – The California (PA) volleyball team was slotted ninth in the initial ranked-order list of the NCAA Atlantic regional rankings, which were released on Wednesday afternoon.
The NCAA regional rankings determine the participants for the NCAA Tournament. The Atlantic Region consists of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), Mountain East Conference (MEC) and the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). All three conference tournament champions receive an automatic bid, while the top-five remaining teams in the final regional rankings earn at-large bids.
The PSAC featured eight teams in the latest rankings with at least three programs represented from each division, while the MEC placed a pair of teams in the rankings on Wednesday.
Gannon (20-6, 19-5) was slotted first in the Atlantic Region after winning 15 of its last 17 matches. Shippensburg (20-6) sits second in the regional rankings with the region's longest active winning streak at 14 matches, while IUP (17-7, 17-6) was positioned third. East Stroudsburg (21-5, 21-4) was slotted fourth with a nine-match winning streak and Shepherd (19-7) rounded out the top five.
Fairmont State (21-9, 18-7) was positioned sixth followed by Seton Hill (14-10, 13-7) in seventh. Wheeling (15-12, 15-6) was slotted eighth, while Cal (19-9, 18-9) and Pitt-Johnstown (15-9) completed the latest regional rankings.
Note, rankings and records are reflective through matches played as of Sunday, Nov. 9.
The Vulcans close the regular season this weekend with a pair of matches against regionally-ranked opponents, beginning on Friday, Nov. 14, against IUP before traveling to face Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday, Nov. 15.
Additionally, Cal sits in a four-way tie for third place in the PSAC West standings, just one match behind IUP for second place in the division.
The regional rankings will be released again next week before the final rankings and NCAA Tournament selections are announced on Nov. 24.
