LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (Nov. 10) – The California (PA) football program earned a pair of weekly accolades from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) for the fourth time this fall on Monday afternoon, as sophomore
Deontae Williams was selected West Special Teams Athlete of the Week and junior
Samuel Hobbs was named West Defensive Athlete of the Week.
Williams and Hobbs helped the Vulcans post a 41-21 win at Gannon Saturday in the final week of PSAC West play. With the victory, Cal fishes in a tie for third in the divisional standings, two games back of the co-leaders.
A native of Pittsburgh, Williams posted a 69-yard punt return for a touchdown and finished the game with 132 all-purpose yards on seven touches (75 punt return, 51 kickoff return, six receiving). He registered a return for a touchdown for the third-consecutive week after previously returning a kickoff for a score in each of the last two games. Williams gave the Vulcans a 14-7 lead with 1:56 left in the first quarter on Saturday with his score on special teams. The Woodland Hills product became the first Cal player since Garry Brown in 2016 to record both a kickoff and punt return for a touchdown in the same season.
Williams ranks second in NCAA Division II this year with 830 combined return yards while averaging 127.50 all-purpose yards per game, third-best in the PSAC. He sits third in the country with 35.9 yards per kickoff return and ranks seventh with 14.6 yards per punt return. Williams is already the first Cal player in at least two decades to eclipse 600 yards on kickoff returns in a season. The 6-foot-0 sophomore has been honored by the league as West Special Teams Athlete of the Week three times in a row, becoming the first player in over 15 years to earn PSAC weekly recognition in three-consecutive weeks.
A native of Philadelphia, Hobbs registered a 44-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown and finished with four tackles (all solo) with 1.0 sack against the Golden Knights. He scored his touchdown with 2:55 left in the fourth quarter after the Gannon quarterback was sacked near midfield on third down. Hobbs helped anchor a defense that held the Golden Knights to just 33 rushing yards after totaling seven sacks in the win.
Hobbs has appeared in all 10 games this fall while making six starts. He has established a career high with 35 tackles (19 solo), including 3.5 TFL and 1.0 sack.
The Vulcans close out the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 15, when they travel to face Shippensburg at 1 p.m. Cal remains in contention for an at-large berth to the NCAA Playoffs with the field announced on Sunday, Nov. 16.
