Vulcans edged at IUP in Coal Bowl

Williams eclipses 100 receiving yards, KO return for touchdown; Hough registers 3.0 TFL in loss

INDIANA, Pa. (Oct. 25) – The Vulcans trailed by just one point in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter on Saturday afternoon before suffering a 38-30 loss at IUP in the 16th edition of the Coal Bowl.

NOTES
• California (5-3, 2-3) has scored at least 29 points in five of its last six games despite dropping three of its last four contests.
• Sophomore Deontae Williams finished with 108 receiving yards on nine catches and added a 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
• Williams has surpassed the century mark in receiving yards in each of the past three weeks while totaling 22 catches during that span.
• Sophomore quarterback Phaeton Hill posted 214 passing yards on 18-of-35 attempts with no touchdowns or interceptions in his second career start.
• Senior defensive lineman Josh Hough and sophomore linebacker Tre Greene tied for the team lead with eight tackles, including 3.0 TFL and 0.5 sack by Hough.
• Junior defensive back Keith Charney added six stops, 1.5 TFL and one interception against the Crimson Hawks.
• Sophomore kicker Harry Radcliffe converted all three of his field-goal attempts, including a long of 39 yards.
• IUP held a nearly 10-minute advantage in time of possession and scored touchdowns on five of its six trips inside the red zone.
• IUP sophomore Devin Whitlock was named the Coal Bowl MVP after totaling 69 receiving yards and two touchdowns on nine catches, plus 118 yards on five kickoff returns.
• The Crimson Hawks remain tied with Edinboro for first place in the PSAC West standings with two weeks remaining in divisional play.

RECAP
• Cal scored a touchdown on its opening drive of the game with a one-yard run by Hill with 9:02 left in the first quarter.
• The Vulcans held a 14-7 lead at the end of the quarter following a three-yard touchdown run by freshman wide receiver Kenny Lewis IV at the 1:49-mark.
• IUP tied the score with a five-yard touchdown pass early in the second half before taking its first lead on a seven-yard touchdown pass with 6:27 left before halftime.
• Charney halted the next drive by the Crimson Hawks with an interception, which the Vulcans converted into a field goal to 21-17 with 56 seconds remaining in the second quarter.
• Williams returned the opening kickoff of the second half 94 yards for a touchdown to give Cal a 24-21 lead.
• Cal forced a punt on the ensuing IUP drive, but the Crimson Hawks recovered a fumble on the return to retain possession.
• IUP capitalized with a 10-play drive capped by a four-yard touchdown pass to retake the lead, 28-24, with 5:48 remaining in the third quarter.
• Radcliffe connected on a 39-yard field goal on the initial play of the fourth quarter to pull Cal within one point, 28-27.
• The Crimson Hawks answered with a 14-yard touchdown run at the 11:29-mark to extend their lead to a 35-27 margin.
• Following a turnover on downs, IUP worked four minutes off the clock before adding a 23-yard field goal to take a double-digit lead, 38-27, with 5:54 left to play.
• The Vulcans added a 33-yard field goal with 44 seconds left before being unsuccessful on the onside kick attempt.

NEXT
• Cal returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 1, when it hosts Frostburg State in non-conference action on Senior Day at 12 p.m.
• The Bobcats boast a 7-1 overall record and lead the Mountain East Conference (MEC) standings with a 5-1 mark in league play.
