California cruises to sweep over Clarion

Rister, Rose combine for eight hits, three homers, 14 RBI, 10 runs scored, two CG shutout victories

CALIFORNIA (April 19) – The California (PA) softball team rolled to a pair run-rule victories in a doubleheader sweep against Clarion at Lilley Field in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action on Friday afternoon, winning 10-0 and 18-0.

Additionally, the Vulcans welcomed Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2024 inductees Rochelle Dierkes (1993-96), Jillian Russell (2009-12) and Natalie Wideman (2011-14) back to Lilley Field for a special First Pitch Ceremony between games. The three former All-Americans will be inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame tomorrow, Saturday, April 20, at the Convocation Center.

RECORDS/SERIES
• The Vulcans improve to 17-14 overall behind a 15-8 record in league play.
• The Golden Eagles fall to 10-27 this season with a 5-16 mark in conference action.
• Cal won three of the four meetings against Clarion this spring with all four games ending via run-rule.

GAME 1
STATS
• Cal scored 10 runs while collecting just three hits in the contest, as it benefited from five walks, three hit by pitches and two errors.
• Senior designated player Alyssa Rose totaled five RBI after tallying two of the team's three hits, including a two-run homer.
• Senior third baseman Shayna Postler posted an RBI single and scored twice in the victory.
• Junior starting pitcher Caleigh Rister (10-6) earned the shutout victory, scattering five hits with zero walks and seven strikeouts in 5.0 innings (71 pitches).
ACTION
• The Vulcans scored three runs with two outs in the bottom of the first on the RBI single by Postler and two-run homer by Rose.
• Cal then scored four runs in the third inning without recording a hit, scoring runs on a hit by pitch, a fielder's choice and a two-out fielding error.
• The Vulcans added to the lead in the fourth with a two-run double by Rose with the bases loaded before Postler scored on a ground-out.
• Clarion starting pitcher Emma Hipps (9-8) suffered the loss after allowing five runs (all earned) in 2.1 innings.

GAME 2
STATS
• The Vulcans scored 18 runs in the victory to match their most runs in a game since February 2016 against West Liberty.
• Rose again posted five RBI on a pair of hits, highlighted by a grand slam in the fourth inning.
• Rister totaled four hits, four RBI and four runs scored, including a solo homer.
• Junior left fielder Carlena Fiorilli reached base three times (two walks, single) and scored three runs.
• Rose (6-8) surrendered just two hits over 5.0 scoreless innings (83 pitches) while strikeout out six to earn the win.
ACTION
• Cal opened the game with three runs in the first inning on RBI singles by Rister and Rose before Rister scored on a sacrifice fly
• The Vulcans scored 11 runs in the third on six hits, three walks, two hit by pitch and one error.
• Rister started the inning with a solo homer before collecting a two-run single in her second at-bat of the inning.
• Junior first baseman Kaitlyn Achtermeier closed the scoring in the third with a two-run single with two outs.
• Rose belted a grand slam in the fourth for the team's first grand slam of the season.
• Clarion starting pitcher Taylor Eckles (0-2) was dealt the loss after yielding seven runs (four earned) in 2.2 innings (85 pitches).

• The Vulcans return to the diamond tomorrow when they travel to face Gannon for a doubleheader in Erie, Pennsylvania, at 3 p.m.
