Vulcans rally late past Fairmont State, 14-10

Kramer breaks season record, ties all-time mark; Carney, McTighe both register multi-homer games

FAIRMONT, W.Va. (April 16) – Sophomore Jake Kramer broke the single-season school record for saves and tied the all-time school saves record, plus sophomore third baseman Conor Carney and freshman first baseman Conner McTighe both registered multi-homer games, as the Vulcans earned a 14-10 win at Fairmont State in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon.

RECORDS/SERIES
• The California (PA) baseball team improves to 24-10 overall behind an 8-0 record against Mountain East Conference (MEC) opponents.
• The Fighting Falcons fall to 11-22 this season behind a 10-7 mark at home.
• The Vulcans have won all three meetings over the last two years against the Fighting Falcons after the teams previously met in North Carolina during the 2017 campaign.

STATS
• Kramer tallied his 10th save of the year on Tuesday to break the previous school record set by Dave Yasenchak in 1983.
• He also is now tied with Yasenchak (1980-83) for first place in school history with 16 career saves.
• Kramer worked 2.0 innings of scoreless relief with a pair of strikeouts on Tuesday afternoon.
• The Hempfield product boasts a 2-0 record with 10 saves and a 0.78 ERA over 23.0 innings pitched this spring.
• Carney collected three hits with two homers and four RBI after entering the game with zero homers in 148 career at-bats
• McTighe finished with three hits, including a grand slam and a two-run homer, and three runs scored.
• Junior left fielder Ryan Callahan tallied three hits, two RBI and two runs scored.
• Junior Aidan Ruiz (2-0) earned the win after tossing 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.

ACTION
• Carney led off the game with a solo homer before Fairmont State scored three runs in the bottom half of the first.
• In the third, Carney belted another solo homer to cut the deficit to a 3-2 margin.
• Cal scored twice in the fourth to claim a 4-3 lead before Fairmont State countered with four runs in the bottom of the inning, 7-4.
• McTighe cut the deficit to 7-6 in the fifth on a two-run homer before the Fighting Flacons scored three runs in the sixth inning, 10-6.
• The Vulcans scored twice in the seventh before taking a 12-10 lead in the eighth on a grand slam by McTighe.
• Cal added a pair of insurance runs in the top of ninth on Tuesday.
• The Fighting Falcons used five pitchers in the contest with Liam Samuels (0-1) being dealt the loss after allowing three runs without recording an out.

• The Vulcans return to action this weekend with a four-game series against IUP in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play, starting with a road doubleheader on Friday, April 19.
