California completes season sweep of Clarion

Kramer records save in both victories; Holmes scatteres two hits over 6.0 scoreless innings in Game 1

CLARION, Pa. (March 25) – The Vulcans completed a four-game series sweep over Clarion on Monday afternoon by winning both games of a doubleheader in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play, posting a 2-0 victory in Game 1 before winning by a 4-1 margin in Game 2.

RECORDS/SERIES
• The California (PA) baseball team improves to 14-4 overall behind an active seven-game winning streak.
• The Vulcans open divisional action with a 4-0 mark for the first time since the 2019 campaign.
• The Golden Eagles drop to 3-17 this season and start league play with a 0-4 record.
• Cal has swept the four-game season series against Clarion in each of the three last three seasons.

GAME 1
STATS
• Sophomore Nathan Holmes (2-0) scattered two hits and one walk over 6.0 scoreless innings (82 pitches) with four strikeouts to claim the victory.
• Classmate Jake Kramer retired all three batters he faced in a scoreless seventh to record his fourth save this spring.
• Junior second baseman Santino Marra reached base in all four plate appearances (two singles, two hit by pitches).

ACTION
• Cal and Clarion both stranded runners in scoring position in both the first and second innings.
• The Vulcans took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth with senior right fielder Colby Rockacy delivering a two-out RBI single and freshman shortstop Caleb Collins then scoring on a wild pitch.
• Holmes retired 12-straight batters, starting in the second inning, before issuing a walk in the sixth.
• Cal finished the game with nine runners left on base, including six in scoring position.

GAME 2
STATS
• Sophomore Sam Georgiana (2-0) earned the win in his first start of the spring, yielding one run (unearned) on five hits in 4.0 innings (74 pitches).
• Kramer recorded his second save of the day, and fifth of the year, with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.
• He is already tied with Andrew Rafalski (2005-08) and Kyle Petty (2010-13) for third all-time in school history with 11 career saves.
• Marra collected another two hits and drew one walk.
• Junior Nathan Meeks tallied two hits, one RBI and one run scored after entering the game as a reserve.
• Senior catcher Hunter Fiori added a pair of hits while making his fourth start of the season.

ACTION
• The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the first inning before the Vulcans answered with a run in the third on a fielder's choice.
• Clarion threatened in the bottom half before the inning ended with a play at the plate when a runner was tagged out attempting to score from second.
• Rockacy posted a two-out RBI double in the fourth before the Vulcans added a run the fifth on an error, 3-1.
• The Golden Eagles stranded the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth after Kramer entered the game and struck out shortstop Scotty McManamon, a 2023 consensus all-region selection.
• Cal extended the lead to 4-1 in the seventh when Meets registered a sacrifice fly.
• The Vulcans committed an uncharacteristic six errors in the victory; the last six-error game by Cal was in April 2008.

NEXT
• Cal returns to non-conference play on Wednesday, March 27, when it hosts a single contest against Walsh (Ohio) at Wild Things Park, starting at 2:30 p.m.
• The Vulcans were previously set to play the Cavaliers tomorrow, Tuesday, March 26, before moving the game due to weather concerns.
