California drops to No. 20 in national poll

WACO, Texas (Nov. 18) – Following a loss in a meeting of nationally-ranked programs, the California (PA) football team dropped three slots to No. 20 in the latest American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Top 25 poll released on Monday afternoon.

The Vulcans suffered a 21-14 loss to No. 3 Kutztown in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship on Saturday. Cal finished the regular season with an 8-2 record behind eight-straight victories, marking its 14th time over the last two decades with at least eight wins. The Vulcans were appearing in the PSAC Championship for the first time since 2016 after finishing divisional play with an undefeated record for only the fourth time in school history.

Cal remains one of three teams from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) featured in the national rankings. Kutztown (11-0) remained at No. 3 after winning its third league title in the last four years, including back-to-back crowns with the win over Cal. Slippery Rock (9-1) remained at No. 11 following a 20-point home victory in the final week of the regular season.

Super Region One now includes only a single non-PSAC team in the top-25 poll with Charleston (W.Va.) (11-0) staying at No. 6 after scoring at least 50 points for the fourth time this year. Findlay fell out of the national rankings following a 23-point road loss over the weekend.

The Vulcans were selected to the NCAA Playoffs last night for the first time since 2017 and earned a first-round home game as the third seed in Super Region One. Cal will host East Stroudsburg (10-1), who was receiving votes in the AFCA Top 25 poll, on Saturday, Nov. 23, with kickoff at 1 p.m.
