Vulcans post victory over Edinboro, 88-73

Cal remains tied for first in PSAC West standings after opening round of divisional play

CALIFORNIA (Jan. 31) – The No. 14 Vulcans extended their winning streak to five games with an 88-73 victory over Edinboro in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play at the Convocation Center on Wednesday night.

RECORDS/SERIES
• The California (PA) men's basketball team improves to 18-2 overall with a 12-2 mark in divisional action.
• The Fighting Scots drop to 5-15 this season behind a 4-10 record in league play under first-year head coach Justin Jennings.
• The Vulcans have won the last seven meetings in the series with the Fighting Scots since the 2019-20 campaign.

STATS
• Sophomore KJ McClurg scored a team-high 22 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including three-of-five from long range, and five-of-five from the free-throw line.
• He also led the team with eight rebounds while playing 37 minutes on Wednesday.
• Sophomore Donald Whitehead, Jr. finished with 17 points on five-of-eight from the floor, including three-of-five from beyond the arc, plus added two rebounds and four assists in 29 minutes off the bench.
• Junior Keith Palek III totaled 14 points on six-of-eight shooting, two rebounds and two assists while playing 17 minutes against Edinboro.
• Redshirt sophomore Bryson Lucas collected eight points and five rebounds on Wednesday.
• Redshirt senior Zyan Collins registered 15 points, three rebounds and four assists in the win.
• Senior Jermaine Hall, Jr. finished with eight points, two rebounds, three assists and two steals versus the Fighting Scots.

GAME ACTION
• Cal scored seven-straight points midway through the first half to take a 28-18 lead at the 8:33-mark.
• The Fighting Scots later worked the deficit to three points, 34-31, with 4:32 remaining before the break.
• The Vulcans responded with six-consecutive points to take a 40-31 lead with 2:56 left in the first half.
• Cal held a 48-39 advantage at halftime after shooting nearly 55 percent from the floor.
• The Vulcans opened the second half with six-straight points to claim a 54-39 lead at the 16:50-mark.
• Edinboro scored eight of the next 10 points to cut the deficit to 56-47 with 13:34 remaining.
• Cal mounted a 13-2 run midway through the second half to take a 73-52 advantage with 9:07 left to play.
• The Vulcans later led by as many as 23 points, 79-56, at the 6:34-mark behind six-straight points.
• Cal maintained a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game with Edinboro working the deficit to 13 points, 84-71, with 1:42 remaining.
• The Vulcans finished the game shooting 52.4 percent (33-of-63) from the floor and converted 14-of-16 (87.5 percent) from the free-throw line.
• Edinboro held a plus-15 rebounding advantage (46-31) behind 21 offensive rebounds.
• Cal totaled 19 assists while committing just nine turnovers in the victory.
• Edinboro junior transfer Bernie Blunt, who ranks second in the PSAC in scoring, led the team with 18 points while shooting just 5-of-21 from the field.
