FROSTBURG, Md. (April 26) – After surging to a nine-run lead in the second inning, the Vulcans posted a 14-1 victory versus Frostburg State on the road in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon.
With the win, the California (PA) baseball team improves to 21-18 overall as they only have league matchups for the remainder of the regular season. Meanwhile, the Bobcats fall to 24-18 this year.
Cal started its offensive explosive in the second inning with an RBI single from sophomore center fielder
Adam Crawford (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) followed by a two-run single by redshirt freshman first baseman
Conor Carney (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) as the Vulcans led by a 3-0 margin. Senior right fielder
Colby Rockacy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) blasted an RBI-double to left field to score sophomore third baseman
Nathan Meeks (New Castle, Pa./Union) before junior shortstop
Brett Bobin (Wampum, Pa./Mohawk) batted-in Carney on a single to center field, 5-0. Senior designated hitter
David Lee (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) doubled to left field as Bobin scored to give Cal a 6-0 advantage.
The Vulcans continued to mount momentum as an infield error increased the lead to 7-0 before junior catcher
Jayden Taitano (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) launched a two-run homer over the left-field fence, 9-0. The Vulcans gained a 10-0 margin in the third inning off another infield error by Frostburg State. Sophomore left fielder
Ryan Callahan (Bexley, Ohio/Bexley) notched an RBI single to left field in the fifth inning, as Cal built an 11-0 advantage. The Bobcats were able to avoid the shutout with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth which was countered with a trio of runs by the Vulcans in the top of the sixth as Carney crossed home plate on a wild pitch followed by Bobin tallying a two-run double to right field, 14-1.
Bobin finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Callahan posted two hits, one RBI and scored twice. Rockacy went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Carney posted a pair of RBI and crossed home plate twice.
Senior starting pitcher
Devin Foster (Davidsville, Pa./Conemaugh Township) registered the win as he held Bobcats scoreless with four hits and tallied a strikeout in 4.0 innings. Frostburg State starting pitcher Hayden Ford suffered the loss as he surrendered five runs (all earned) on four hits in 1.0-plus innings.
Cal returns to the diamond on Friday, April 28, as it hosts Pitt-Johnstown in a PSAC West doubleheader at Wild Things Park, starting at 1 p.m.
