Baseball falls to Ashland in Florida, 5-1

Rockacy registers inside-the-park homer; Vulcans strand 13 runners on base in the contest

DAVENPORT, Fla. (March 6) – The Vulcans opened their spring trip to Florida at the RussMatt Baseball Invitational with a 5-1 loss to Ashland (Ohio) on Sunday evening.

With the loss, the California (PA) baseball team falls to 5-2 on the season. Meanwhile, the Eagles advance to 5-1 overall after being picked to win the North Division of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) in the preseason poll. Ashland advanced to the G-MAC Championship last spring and appeared in the NCAA Tournament for the 17th time under longtime head coach John Schaly.

Senior right fielder Colby Rockacy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) collected an inside-the-park home run and drew a walk in the contest. Freshman Jason Peterson, Jr. (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) drew a pair of walks and posted a single after entering the game off the bench. The Vulcans stranded 13 runners on base in the contest, including eight in scoring position.

The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the first before left fielder Max Caron belted a solo homer to start the second inning. Cal was in position to answer in the second with the bases loaded before a strikeout ended the inning. Ashland added to the lead with a sacrifice fly in the fourth before leaving a pair of runners in scoring position in the fifth.

In the seventh, the Vulcans recorded an out at home and third base before stranding runners on the corners in the bottom of the inning. Ashland added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth on a two-out RBI single, 5-0. Cal avoided the shutout when Rockacy started the bottom of the ninth with an inside-the-park homer, his third homer of the season.

Senior starter Devin Foster (Davidsville, Pa./Conemaugh Township) was dealt the loss after surrendering three runs (all earned) on eight hits and zero walks in 5.0 innings. Freshman Dylan Mathiesen (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) pitched 2.2 innings of relief and allowed two runs (both earned) on three hits and four walks while tallying a season-high five strikeouts. Ashland sophomore Cam Scott earned the win after yielding one run (earned) on three hits in 5.0 innings of relief while notching five strikeouts.

Cal returns to action tomorrow, Monday, March 6, as it faces Grand Valley State (Mich.) of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) in Auburndale, Florida, at 2:30 p.m.
