California falls at Edinboro, 83-77

Harris sets career highs in points, rebounds; Vulcans shoot over 45 percent from the floor

EDINBORO, Pa. (Feb. 4) – In a meeting of teams tied for second place in the divisional standings, the Vulcans dropped an 83-77 contest at Edinboro on Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.

With the loss, the California (PA) women's basketball team falls to 14-8 this season with a 10-6 mark in conference play. The Vulcans have lost eight-straight road meetings in the series with the Fighting Scots dating back to the 2014-15 campaign. Meanwhile, Edinboro improves to 14-7 overall behind an 11-5 record in league action.

Sophomore Allycia Harris (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Elmer L. Meyers) set career highs in both points and rebounds while tallying her third double-double of the season. She led all players with 23 points on 10-of-12 shooting from the floor, marking her first 20-point game with the program. Harris also collected 15 rebounds (five offensive), two assists, one block and one steal on Saturday. The Wilkes-Barre native is averaging 16.2 points over the last five games on an incredible .706 field-goal percentage (36-for-51).

Junior Halle Herrington (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) finished with 16 points behind four-of-nine from long range and added four rebounds and three assists. Senior Ciaira Loyd (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) tallied 12 points, seven assists and three steals, while classmate Rajah Fink Dover, Pa./Dover) posted nine points and five rebounds before fouling out midway through the third quarter.

The Vulcans raced out to an 8-0 lead to start the game, as the Fighting Scots were held scoreless until the 5;57-mark. Cal then stretched the lead to 14-2 on a layup by Harris before Edinboro made back-to-back three-pointers to start a 20-1 rally over the final 4:37 of the first quarter to seize a 22-15 lead. The Fighting Scots tallied the opening points of the second quarter before the Vulcans snapped a six-plus minute drought without a field goal at the 8:04-mark on a three-pointer by Herrington. Edinboro later countered with five-straight points and held a 29-20 lead with 6:30 left before the break. Cal responded with a 12-2 rally to reclaim the lead at 32-31 on a layup by sophomore Talia Gilliard (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) at the 3:21-mark. The Fighting Scots scored a layup on the ensuing possession before the teams traded free-throws for the remainder of the second quarter with Edinboro taking a 37-35 lead at halftime.

Cal converted a three-pointer in the opening minute of the third quarter before Edinboro made a trio of layups in less than a minute to take a 43-38 lead at the 6:47-mark. The Vulcans then tied the score at 43-43 on a layup by Harris with 5:01 left in the quarter. The Fighting Scots followed by rallying off seven-consecutive points to claim a 50-43 lead at the 3:48-mark when Fink fouled out of the game and was issued her second technical foul. Cal cut the deficit to a single possession, 54-51, on a layup by Gilliard with 1:02 remaining in the third quarter. Edinboro responded with an 8-3 run to take a 64-52 lead before Loyd scored on a layup with 8:14 left to play. The Fighting Scots then stretched their lead to 13 points, 69-56, before the Vulcans answered with an 11-5 rally to trim the deficit to 74-67 with 2:33 remaining. Cal later managed to score six points in the closing 30-plus seconds to make the final score 83-77.

The Vulcans finished the game shooting 45.3 percent (29-of-64) from the floor while converting 7-of-20 (35.0 percent) from long range. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots shot at a .381 clip (24-of-63) and made 26-of-30 (86.7 percent) from the charity stripe. Cal finished with a 42-36 rebounding advantage and scored 34 points in the paint, plus forced 16 turnovers.

Junior Rana Elhusseini and sophomore Hayley Sims both led the Fighting Scots with 18 points. Elhusseini, who entered the weekend ranked among the top 15 in the country in scoring, converted 10-of-11 from the free-throw line and registered seven assists, while Sims shot 7-of-17 from the floor with six rebounds. Senior Bella Burrelli finished with eight points and a team-high eight rebounds on Saturday.

The Vulcans return to action with back-to-back home game, starting on Monday, Feb. 6, against Slippery Rock at 5:30 p.m.
