CALIFORNIA (Nov. 11) – Led by seven three-pointers and 25 points from junior transfer
Sierra Bermudez, the California (PA) women's basketball team claimed an 84-68 season-opening victory over No. 16 West Virginia State on Saturday night while hosting the MEC/PSAC Challenge at the Convocation Center.
RECORDS/SERIES
• The Vulcans open the year with a 1-0 record after being chosen the preseason favorites in the PSAC West.
• The Yellow Jackets were tabbed the preseason favorites in the MEC after making their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2004.
• Cal last played WVSU during the 2019-20 campaign and has won all three home meetings in the series since December 2017.
STATS
• Bermudez, who previously played at Clarion, scored a game-high 25 points on 9-of-15 shooting behind 7-of-13 from long range.
• She is the second Cal player in the last two years to make seven treys in a game.
• Junior
Iyahnna Williams, a transfer from Alderson-Broaddus, finished with 11 points, seven rebounds and eight assists.
• Sophomore
Alicia Young tallied 11 points, four rebounds and two assists in the win.
• Redshirt senior
Dejah Terrell posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds (five offensive), plus two blocks, while playing 25 minutes.
• Junior
Allycia Harris registered nine points, seven rebounds and two assists while battling foul trouble.
