BOWIE, Md. (Nov. 11) – The Vulcans started the year with a pair of victories over the weekend against CIAA -members Fayetteville State (N.C.) – 60-43 on Friday – and host Bowie State – 82-61 on Saturday – at the Bowie State Tip-Off Classic.
RECORDS
• The California (PA) men's basketball team opens a campaign with a 2-0 mark for the second time in three years.
• The Vulcans were picked second in the preseason PSAC West poll after receiving four first-place votes.
• In the CIAA, Fayetteville State was the preseason favorite in the Southern Division and Bowie State was chosen fifth in the Northern Division.
STATS VS FAYETTEVILLE STATE
• Sophomore
Donald Whitehead, Jr. led the team in scoring with 14 points while making his first career start.
• Sophomore
KJ McClurg finished with 13 points and seven rebounds.
• Redshirt senior
Zyan Collins tallied 13 points, nine rebounds, two assists and two blocks off the bench.
• Redshirt sophomore
Bryson Lucas posted nine points and three steals.
STATS VS BOWIE STATE
• McClurg tied his career high with 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting, including four-of-five from long range.
• He also tied for the team lead with eight rebounds on Saturday.
• Junior
Keith Palek III added 20 points on 7-of-14 from the floor, seven rebounds and four assists in the win.
• Collins finished with 15 points on seven-of-eight shooting, five rebounds and two blocks
• Whitehead posted nine points, three assists and three steals.
• Lucas also tied for the team lead with eight rebounds while playing 20 minutes.
NOTES
• Collins now ranks No. 13 all-time in school history with 1,321 points after entering the year ranked No. 17 in career points.
