Vulcans fall late at Seton Hill, 2-1

Galbreath scores first goal of the season; Teams combine for 15 shot attempts in second half

GREENSBURG, Pa. (Sept. 21) – The Vulcans suffered a 2-1 loss at Seton Hill on Wednesday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action after allowing the game-winning goal on a rebound off a penalty kick with just over two minutes remaining.

With the loss, the California (PA) women's soccer team falls to 1-4-2 this season behind a 1-3-2 mark in league play. Meanwhile, the Griffins improves to 4-1-3 overall with a 2-1-3 record in conference action under first-year head coach Adrian Blewitt.

The Vulcans took an early 1-0 lead in the 14th minute when senior Lindsie Galbreath (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch) scored on a through ball from midfield by sophomore Adriana Marina (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) and beat the goalie in the lower right corner. Seton Hill answered at the 21:29-mark with a goal by Madison Carr off a feed from Mikayla Moyer to tie the score at 1-1. Cal later threatened with a pair of shots on net in a span of three minutes before Seton Hill countered with an offensive attack in the closing four minutes of the half that included a pair of shots and a corner kick.

Cal applied early pressure in the second half with multiple shot attempts and a corner kick in less than a 90-second span. Midway through the half, the Vulcans and Griffins were both unable to break the tie with an attempt on target. Seton Hill controlled possession in the later stages of the contest with three shots in just under four minutes before the Griffins were issued a yellow card at the 85:00-mark. The Griffins mounted another offensive attack in the 88th minute with a shot on goal and corner kick before the Vulcans were whistled for a red card at the 87:38-mark. Sophomore goalkeeper Emily Ouimet (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) made a save on the penalty kick by Moyer, however, Alianna Resch collected the rebound and gave Seton Hill a 2-1 lead with just over two minutes left to play.

Ouimet registered five saves while facing 13 shots over 90 minutes on Wednesday. She has posted at least five saves in four of the last five games.

The Griffins out-shot the Vulcans by a 13-9 margin with the teams combining for 15 attempts in the second half. Seton Hill also posted a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Cal continues its road trip on Saturday, Sept. 24, when it faces Gannon in Erie, Pennsylvania, at 3 p.m. The Lady Knights enter the weekend as the last remaining unbeaten team in PSAC West play.
